Hey all,

I just bought Ollie a chicken flavored nylabone (http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11316632#prodTab1) and he absolutely loves it...but how much is he supposed to be able to chew off? Is it okay if it is wearing down and a little comes off? Or is that not something he should have? I took it away for now until I figure this out.

Thanks!

I was curious myself about these - I did a Google search and came up with this interesting article.

It seems as many of the things that are made for our dogs are harmful.

Isn't that a bummer? Ollie loved it...better safe then sorry, but that stinks.
For every product you are going to find something critical on the web. It is important to know your dog, and to critically evaluate products, but to also not just disregard products because of a single article or two. I will not use rawhide - too large of a choking risk or cow hooves - splinter and stink. I have power chewers and use nylabones. I inventory them often. I don't worry about the little shreds that come off. when they are making progress on and edge, and it looks like they are going to get a piece off I cut it off before they can chew it off. I put down antlers for my crew yesterday for the first time. They all decided that they had to chew only one. And between Zach and Bruno, my largest frenchie, they took a 6 inch antler down to 3in in one evening. I threw it out. It is just not strong enough for them. I will stick to nylabones, they hold up better and the dogs get a better chewing experience.

And my guys, even the puppy, love the cow hooves without a problem--but they must not be very strong chewers--my friend's poodles came over and were breaking up the hooves into splintery pieces in a few minutes. They have no interest in nylabones and I have yet to try the antlers. I guess there are bully sticks that do not stink, but they are too expensive me me with 3 doodles to keep busy!

I agree that many of the things sold at stores keep the vets in business and you have to judge it by how your dog  handles it--you need to supervise-- but if tiny pieces are coming off the nylabone, I think they will pass right through, no problem.

I had a terrier years ago (just 20 pounds) that ate a whole bag of beads that my girls had just gotten for Christmas--we didn't know what had happened to them but then I found them out in the yard for several days after they had passed through the dog!

My Oliver is a agressive chewer and loves to chew things.  I am very careful what I give him because he has destroyed a Kong !!!  I have elk antlers which he loves and just bought the hooves and they seem to like them as well.  I only buy American made animal products - very important !!!  Also the bully sticks are great.  No rawhide = BAD !!!!.
Please google "lawsuits against Nylabone".  They ruin a dogs teeth,  my daughter had to sue Nylabone to recover close to $4000.00 in dental bills resulting from cracked teeth.  There is much written about the dangers of Nylabone and rawhide for dogs. We only provide our Doodles with antlers.

I think every product has a good and bad.  Our trainer said that any type of ball that has a covering kind of like a tennis ball is out...The abrasive covering on the ball can wear down the dogs tooth enamel...balls out. Rawhide...out, toys with paint, out! stuffies, out!  Anything made in China, out!!!

I think the moral of the story is watch your dog with everything you give them...

After only chewing it lightly for months, Cocoa nearly ate an entire nylabone one afternoon when she was about 7 months old.  Luckily she threw it up- it was a pile of hard, shredded plastic in her stomach- it would have been quite dangerous I'm sure if she hadn't thrown it up.  Now I only give her raw marrow bones (from U.S. cows).
