Spud's foot is bothering him.  This toe could be red from licking or we think it may be this nail.  The nail is all Quick?  I really don't know much about dog's nails. Anyone?  Opinion

Should the nail's quick look like this?

The rest of the nails do not look like this at all.

But he seems to be licking all through this area from toe all the way up

This nail may have always looked this way. I have no idea and I can't remember.

UPDATE:
It appears the foot is bruised :( Late last night it was no longer red and he was no longer licking his foot and was darkening. It's bruising. He plays really hard and last night attempted to take a corner fast on the wood floors. He slid into the wall. Stopped, and went and laid down. He knows it is time to just take it easy. Our dogs, sometimes, are smart this way too! Ouch. We've all bruised a toe. He is walking fine. If things worsen, of course, he will see his vet

I don't really see a problem with the nail . The first photo has an are that looks very red, near ? Roger's finger. Could be infected/foreign body. Is it hot?

Compared to the other foot, it is warm.  :(  I have looked for days.  I can't see anything.  Let me look at the other pictures.

Nail looks fine-Dark stripe is just pigment and nothing to worry about--toe looks irritated--could have some dermatitis from something he stepped on--I would put some cortisone cream on it and wrap it so he can't get to it.

The nail itself looks totally normal, all of Darwin's are transparent with a black stripe down the center. BUT, the toe does look really red. Perhaps it's a hot spot?

Hey, I just found the area.  I'll try to get pictures from afar. He won't let me near him

The nail looks fine, as the others have said, the dark stripe is normal and pretty common. But the toe itself looks very irritated and inflamed, and if he's licking it, it must be bothering him.

I agree with Ginny, if you have any type of antibiotic-antifungal cream with cortisone, I would try that and keep it covered so that he can't lick it. Quincy was doing the same thing to the bottom of his paw and licked it almost raw, two days of cream ( I used Viaderm because it's what I had) and covering it and he isn't bothering it anymore. Like you I looked and looked and felt around but couldn't find anything. It didn't bother him when I touched it and he walked on it normally. I hope Spud feels better soon.

Sorry, I just can't get to this as he is upset.  I'll let it him calm down, soak the foot again and try later.

Here is what I have. I think I see something?  A dark spot.

I don't know about the nail, but that area sure looks sore!  Wish I knew more, so I could offer assistance, but will just have to go with hoping it feels better soon, poor guy.

Looks like he's forming a hot spot or has some sort of infection. I would keep it clean and dry. Try putting a sock over it to keep him from licking. I hope it's nothing major and goes away soon!

Thank you all. I will let you know tomorrow if I find something. In the meantime, I'll wrap it when he goes to sleep... soon I hope

I see what you mean about the nail. It does look different than all the other ones but from what others have said it sounds like it is still normal for a nail. I don't have anything to add about the redness issue other than I'm sorry he has such a sore tender foot. In the last picture it looks like the redness extends up into the next toe too. Is that correct? Is it more than one toe? Hope he is feeling better soon.
