On Saturday Whopper had a blast at the doodle romp. However, an hour after leaving, we noticed that Whopper was limping and not really wanting to have to move around much. I looked at her paws and noticed that on 3 out of the 4 paws, the largest pad on each had a tear or what seemed like the outer layer missing on part. We bought a cream from Petco that says it's suppose to help moisturize, restore, repair...but didn't know if we should be doing anything else. We also tried to wrap the paws but only one of the 3 managed to stay wrapped and right now we want them to get some air anyway. None of the paws are bleeding and it's not a cut or gash with any opening, it's just like the tough outer layer has peeled away. Any thoughts/suggestions would be great!
Ahhhhh ~ You must have been at the romp in Princeton. It had to have been the "wood chips!!" Our friend Ziggy had cuts & scratches all over his paws. I checked Bella & Primo's paws and just looking at the pads, all seemed fine. Then late last night Primo started chewing on all four paws. I took a closer look between the pads and all four are red & irritated with scratches and small cuts. I put a small amount of Neosporin between the pads. He seems to be more comfortable today.
Yes. We were in Princeton! Whopper doesn't have the scratches, just entire pieces missing but it must have been the woodchips. Hopefully all of their paws will heal quickly.
I have had this happen when the dogs are running on concrete or padded floors with a slighly rough surface for long periods of time. I use a paw protector that looks like a wax almost. It comes in a container that looks like the old shoe polish tins. I just rub the dog's paws in the tin before a long walk or romp. It is supposed to help in the winter also. It seems to do a pretty good job. I keep a tin in the car and put it on them right before they get out. This saves on having even more doggy foot prints on my hardwoods. :)
I have someting called Musher's Secret, paw protection par execellence! It sounds like what Moose and Mica are talking about. I'm not sure where i got it from though. Maybe JB Wholesale.PEt supplies Inc.
Our Bearded Collie ran arund my in-laws pool (many summers ago) like a loon since she could not 'herd' my daughterrs while they were swimming. She wold up with cuts and blisters on all four feet. MILs vet is at the Univ of Penn - their suggestion was to put cool tea bags on her feet. It gave her lots of relief from the pain. did it help heal them., this I dont know but she did feel better.
I am so sorry Whopper is going through that. It can't be pleasant.
My last dog had the exact same thing-he would run into Georgian Bay like a maniac. There were lots or rocks and pebbles on the bottom of the Bay. He just ran thru the water for 10 to 15 minutes along the shoreline. We made up a spray bottle with a little salt and warm water and would spray his pads every 15 minutes or so. The next day-he was good to go-although we did keep him off the rocks.
