Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I am really struggling with how different my 4 1/2 month old goldendoodle looks after her first cut!!!! She was getting so straggly and could not see so I took her to a recommended groomer. She looks like a completely different dog! Anyone else feel sad after the first cut?

I have attached a before and after shot.

Her name is Harper by the way!

She's beautiful! Love the cut!

Thanks! I thought the groomer did a great job. I guess it was just the initial shock of losing my baby at only 4 1/2 months!
I have a labradoodle named SweetPea, when she got her first puppy cut to get rid of the baby fur and let the adult hair come in, I was in such shock at how different she looked. I took several steps backward from shock and accidentally backed into a dog shampoo display that crashed to the floor. Shampoo went everywhere and several bottles opened. Oh my what a mess !!! The vets assistant came out and said "not to worry she would take care of it". We left and I cried going home and swore I had gotten the wrong dog. I even thought about having her chip read to see if she was mine. But after arriving home, she soon started doing all the unique crazy doodle antics we were used to, and I knew it would only be a matter of time before her fur would grow back.
Presently it's coming in a bit more curly and more apricot/Carmel color is coming through.
I think she looks great! She looks different but that is just the way first cuts are. I can't believe how different my human boys looked after that first real haircut.
Thanks! Hopefully you will see her on person on the 25th!

I think she looks great! Not that much different to me. :) Just a smoother coat. Give it time and when she gets wet she will look more shaggy again I bet. :)

I feel your pain.  Dinah had gradual trims...first around the eyes and the paw pads as a baby, then a sanitary when she was older, and currently at 7 months the suggested puppy cut.  She didn't get the doodle part of it...and the feet are not fluffy, so she just looks like a poodle to me.  The reason was the upcoming coat change, and also the gradual getting accustomed to the grooming procedure.  Hoping there will be fewer mats when she starts her adult coat, and easier to brush through.  The shorter haircut is also doing a better job of protecting her skin from the sun.  She has a fine, silky coat.

Has anyone let you know how long it will take for her to look Doodley again?

That's not a drastic change for Harper compared to some!  But yeah, I'm sure there is always some sadness because I think it's a realization that they are growing up.

Harper is adorable in both pictures!!  I do think you may have found a good groomer as the cut around her front legs looks pretty darn good for a wiggly 4+month old.  She hasn't changed her coat yet, so brace yourself for another "growing up" land mark.  All the changes are bittersweet with both dogs and kids.  But you will always love them.
