Hello DK,

I just have a quick question. Our puppy 8 weeks old has been home 2 days. On the way home (5 hrs drive) he peed in his crate. He was smelling of urine so I used "Simple Solution" Puppy wipes very gentle and sparingly on his legs and feet. Now all he does is chew his feet and sometimes whimpers. Did I do the wrong thing? Our Vet appointment is on Wednesday. Any thoughts?

Yes, insurance is an ASAP thing. But unfortunately, if your dog hasn't been to a vet with an appropriate record, you need to go, and any conditions found at that first visit are considered pre-existing. It probably wouldn't have helped in this instance, but it will definitely work for any future non-pre existings!

I know but I tried to get it prior to picking up the puppy & they wouldn't give me a quote. I didn't know the sex or his name. We picked up our puppy at 4:45PM Saturday drove 5 hours home. Had a restless sleep, had the adjustment day on Sunday and called Monday morning by 9:00AM. There is a waiting period and that would be after the 5 days required for us to take in the puppy per the breeder. Seriously this morning was my ASAP.

I think that's all you can do! PetPlan has a 14 day waiting period for illness after the initial effective date. They also require a vet visit within 30 days of the effective date, and it determines pre-existing conditions.

The first vet visit requirement/14 day waiting period limits the plan's liability, and people sometimes forget this, probably keeps premiums lower for everyone. Not perfect, but claims experience does have something to do with product price. (I work in underwriting for human health insurance.

No one answered your question about telling the breeder--I say YES! There must be some reason this pup left the litter with bacterial and yeast infections and others may have it too (and may be undiagnosed!) I think you need to tell them.  I think they should pay your bill. My breeder's contract says that the pup must go to the vet within 3 days of coming home and that if there is an issue, the breeder wants to know.

I agree with Ginny. The ear infections didn't just develop in the 48 hours you've had the dog.

I told the breeder

As far as the Insurance goes. I tried to get the insurance but I didn't even know the sex of my dog until I picked him up on Saturday late afternoon. I called this morning to get the Insurance. And at that point the Insurance wouldn't cover our visit at the Vet's today. I had 5 days to go to the Vet per the breeder. Whatever I just want to take care of my puppy.
