So I was cutting B's nails today and she ended up pulling her foot as soon as I tried to cut it... Needless to say I cut the quik. Ugh. So I put cornstarch on and forgot about it. It stopped bleeding. Well now we just got out to the lake and she almost immediately opens it back up again, and I cannot get It to stop unless she is lieing completely still! I called a groomer and they said the same thing I've been doing. They also suggested if it doesn't stop in half hour were supposed to take to vet and get cauterized... Well we don't have a vet out here and I don't really want to go to the 24hr and drive back to the city. Do any of you have suggestions on how to wrap the foot or a different method then cornstarch or flour? And do I really have to become worried if it bleeds for more then half hour? Its not gushing just an obvious trickle, and like I said stops if the corn starch actually STAYS on.

Thanks!

Just make sure the cornstarch dosen't come off.

I would consider using some crazy glue.

Absolutely!!
One of those styptic pencils that men use when they knick themselves shaving might work.  Then tape two toes together with a gauze pad between them.
If you have a bar of soap you can rake the nail across the bar or beeswax.

I have a dood that does that too-hate it! I have just purchased styptic powder from petedge.com and you may want to keep that around for these times. Keeping it dry will help--and the other suggestions are great.

I am considering using a nail grinder with the dog that hates having her nails done---my husband has a dremel tool with a stone that can be used to grind the nails that I have heard works well--you just do it gradually and get them used to it.
