Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
My husband and I noticed today that Stella has scabs in various places....her legs...a few spots on her back...a couple on her head..near her ears. We examined them and they seem to just be scabs...no ticks or anything. Could these simply be bug bites that have scabbed over? Seamus, our other doodle, doesn't have them, but Miss Stella has a naughty habit of rolling on her back in our grass...and the weather here has certainly brought the bugs out.
Any other ideas or anything else I should be concerned about? She is not really bothered by them...not being itchy, but I wanted to see if anyone else has seen/felt these on their doodle. I wouldn't be overly concerned, but she has maybe about 8 of them on her. She was at the vet about a month ago for a yeast infection so I really don't want to have to bring her back for these...
Stella thanks you as always =)
UPDATE A MONTH LATER:
Well, we have been battling these "scabs" for a good month now. First we were told it was a yeast infection and were prescribed cream and wipes......they did absolutely nothing. We took her back to the vet the other day and demanded an antibiotic in pill form. Turns out she has a staph infection! Poor Stella had scabs and raw patches of skin ALL OVER her belly. The first vet (an associate of the man we normally see) apparently overlooked a common problem.....makes me so angry! So over $300 later (we had to pay for another visit, prescriptions...and she was due for a vaccine anyway) Stella is feeling much better and her belly is clearing up.

Every once in a while I see a small scab on Sasha's back, I always wondered what it was and at first through it was a flea bite but both my doodles are on Advantix II so no fleas or ticks here. Then when I was telling my BF about the couple of scabs he said "oh thats probably from Oliver biting her back trying to play with her" . I gave the statement some more thought and watched my doodles when they play and the scabs are right where Oliver play bites Sasha !! This is the case with my dogs, it may not be be the case with your dogs. Oliver has none of these scabs and both of my doodles are attached at the hip so I would think that if Sasha had something so would Oliver.
Rooney will also on occasion have a scab or two - which I'm sure is from tusseling with his brother when they play. Watch to see if Seamus is getting a little rough - sometimes Stuart has to take a "time out" if he gets too carried away with Rooney.
Ollie has a scab on the side of his face right now and it is in a spot that he always seems to scratch. He will occassionally catch the scab and then bleed. I haven't seen any fleas on either of my dogs and they only really spend time outside when we are on our walks so I'm thinking that he might just have scratched himself. He is going to the vet on Friday for a dental cleaning, so I'm going to have the vet take a look at his face then too.
If Stella doesn't seem to be bothered by them, I would just keep an eye on them and see if they clear up. If they get worse, I would see the vet.
We started using Frontline again (even after I swore I would never use it on them again) but the bugs are just so bad this year....I didn't even think of flea bites....she has 2 more bites on her inner thigh this morning. She was rolling in the grass again last night, so maybe she is being bit by fleas but they are not staying on her because of the Frontline? We keep her and Seamus shaved down....her hair is much shorter now than in the picture above. Does anyone use anything to sooth bug bites? They do play rough, but judging from the location of her scabs, I don't think it is that.
Jake has lots of dried up scabs now too due to an encounter in our yard with an opossum. He is on a flea preventative but I am thinking the creature was infested with fleas. I found him licking it to death and with all his fur the fleas just jumped right on over to his furry head. Of course I didn't realize until 2 days later that Jake had them. One flea bite can send him into flea dermatitis and once I discovered them I found about 30...June was a long month:(
Anyway he is full of dried up scabs now. He also LOVES to roll around in the grass.
He was licking the possum to death? Was the possum playing possum?
Becka - the possum was playing possum alright......Jake found another one in the yard this past weekend and I found him doing the same thing.....argh!
Dogs just don't seem to understand cause and effect, lol.
that is so true.....in addition, Baxter didn't understand why he was getting a Dawn shampoo bath out on the deck at midnight.
It's kind of sweet, though, that he was licking it instead of tearing it to bits. Or at least it would be sweet if it weren't also kind of disgusting. ;)
We had an opossum encounter also. Licked to death and in our bedroom - do not know for sure which of our dogs brought us this treasure..... They are all on Frontline Plus but are itching and chewing like crazy. I can't find scabs or bites but wonder what they are getting into that is causing the same problem in all three.
