So it seems from all of the reply's I received about "Cockapoo's" that they are really great dogs. HOWEVER- we think that a cockapoo may not be able to keep up with the rough and tough playfulness of our 83 lb. Goldendoodle. GBK's dog "Buddy" At 60 lbs. seems to be an exception in the size of these sweet little dogs. I am still looking into these great dogs BUT... we were talking again last night and maybe a medium labradoodle or goldendoodle would fit the bill as suggested by many of you. We would like to hear from you about the differences, if any in these two types of doodles. Is one more high energy than the other or does one tend to shed more, etc. Websites just cannot give me the information I get from my DK friends. Thanks everyone.
My opinion is they are pretty darn close...since both have at least 1/2 retriever (same working class) they have that in common. Toss in a poodle on both sides and they get even closer. I'm sure there are subtle differences in the extremes, but overall...they seem a lot alike to me. Here's a past discussion: http://www.doodlekisses.com/forum/topics/difference-in-doodles
I have a medium f1b goldendoodle (her Royal Highness Abby) and a huge f2.5b (ya she is half f1b, half f1; - so an[ f2 and a half b] is more accurate than f2 or f3 LOL) standard labradoodle.. (Thomases bobsy twin, Kaela)
I dont think there is a difference, to speak of. Here and there I heard that godendoodles, were easier/mellower.....dont believe it! My Kaela is much mellower and easier than my goldendoodle. So I think it would be safe to conclude there realluy is no difference...and personality is something you are born with and not breed specific in this case.
The only thing I would say from experience and reading posts here on DK is that goldendoodles are very mouthy and nippy as pups. My Abby was a pirranha. Kaela is not mouthy at all.
That is one of the things i was trying to find out. As I've whined about dozens of times on DK, Thomas was SOoooo mouthy as a puppy. He never chewed anything in the house though, just us. Relentlessly for his first 6 mths and sometimes even after that. My sister has two labs and they were never mouthy, my neighbour has a GR and she was a mouthy puppy. So are Labradoodles less mouthy or is it just luck. Adina's LD was really mouthy she said for about a year.
I think you just posted about your dog being mouthy until around 6months...is there anything you did that seemed to help. We have a 6month Labradoodle who is a wonderful dog but is killing us with grabbing /mouthing our arms. Just the family ( and a favorite neighbor or two) she's picked up other training so easily...can't seem to break her of this.
Our ALD went thru a mouthy phase from 6-9 months. He didn't hurt anyone and he did it very obviously to get our attention, but it was annoying and embarrassing when he did it outside the immediate family.
We worked on getting him to sit when he meets people and as soon as he sat (timing is everything), we asked people to lavish him with attention. So now we have a dog that lurches at people, stops himself, then sits and scoots around pursuing people and still occasionally nibbles their fingers, but not the whole arm...
Yeah, we were vacationing near my in-laws during this stage, and I heard a lot of "Stanley [their deceased standard poodle] was never this mouthy" and "Stanley never tried to eat off the counters."
LOL.
My neighbor has an F1B goldendoodle that looks almost exactly like my ALD with very similar temperaments, so it is possible that they can be remarkably alike. My mini/medium LD plays quite roughly and think of her self as a big dog, even though she is 35 pounds. My much larger ALD (45 pounds but 6 inches taller) is a perfect match for my smaller dog. But a different smaller dog may be afraid of her. So, it really is hard to plan a good match even though we want to!
I truly don't think there is much difference. However, look at the eyes - goldendoodles have especially sweet faces. That being said, when I cruise the pictures - my ALD most resembles goldendoodles every time! This is only in photos. Check out Ned and Graciedoodle -Nancie Casey's tall girl, and look at Penny the Wonderdog photos. As to personality, I keep trying to get a handle on who responds to discussions and how they respond. Both doodle types and generations have, high energy dogs and not; mouthy dogs and not, shedders and not, counter surfers and not; jumpers and not; barkers and...... get it?
I would say that the differences are more between individual dogs and the way each dog may may be trained than in the general clasification of Goldendoodle vs Labradoodle.
Our Goldendoodle, Holly, is 65 pounds and lives and plays with four Maltese. She only really roughhouses with our five pound male Maltese becsuse he is such a spunky little guy.
