So, since Toby has had his cone on and I have felt sorry for him (he basically, once he lowers his head over his bowl, is eating in a cone of silence (no pun intended) ), I have been mixing half a scrambled egg in with his food to entice him to eat. Of course, he loves it. I'm thinking that maybe he shouldn't need eggs in his food for the rest of his natural days. I was considering dribbling a little chicken stock or something over his food instead, and then decreasing the amount each day. The cone comes off tomorrow - however, I am going to be incredibly paranoid that he will fuss with his foot and reopen the now delicately closed up paw pad. The cone will go back on at night for a week, I think, as that's when he got into a lot of trouble with it before. I'm thinking when I go out during the day I might put a sock around it. I am wondering, though, if that will just draw his attention to it.

Oy - why can't things just be easy?

Has Toby always been a picky eater or just since the surgery? What type of food is Toby eating? I think if it's stinky enough he will eat without the additives. We once had Daisy on Orijen and frankly she was persnickety about eating, I have since switched to Acana, Pacific (Salmon and stinky) and she does not need any enticing, she gobbles it up. I had to gradually change by adding just a 1/3 cup Acana to  2/3 cup Orijen but that only took about a week...never had any issues. Daisy is NOT food motivated so she really must like it. We do give her a tablespoon of wet in her dinner meal (Wellness Chicken) to get her excited about dinner though.

Only picky since his surgery.  He's on Acana Light and Fit.  Basically he's been pouting since the cone went on....

Well ya can't blame him for that poor baby!

:0)

Maybe after the cone is off he will just eat - ya never know till you try.

Both of Jackdoodle's vets- regular vet and specialist- want him to get at least three whole eggs a week for the biotin, so if Toby likes them, there really isn't any harm in giving them, at least until he's completely healed. Another alternative would be to hardboil them and then just sprinkle a little bit of chopped egg on the food.

That's just what I do for my guys....I sprinkle a hard boiled egg over their food a few times a week as a special treat.  It's inexpensive, easy, and it makes their food more appealing.
From experience, I'd say be careful w/ juices.  Eggs fine and he loves them.  Sheila got Diarrhea from stocks, gravies, etc.  But she is little so maybe it's different with the bigger ones.  You can be safe w/ a little shredded cheese if anything runny.  I switch kinds.
After Sasha was sick and not eating all that well I buy canned dog food (the good stuff), I heat it up for a few seconds in the microwave and mix it into her food (kibble) and she loved it.  Oliver on the other hand inhaled his food when he was a puppy butg now is a picky eater at 1 yr. old.  I do the same for him as well.  It works for us.

I have to go with an egg every day (or part of one) for the rest of his natural life. Seems like a small thing to ask for after self inflicted surgery and 2 rounds of the cone - and now a sock!!!!!!!  I don't think that there is a wrong choice here - what ever you are comfortable with - I hope all goes well as he adjusts to his healed paw and life without the cone..
