Based on a Facebook post about how dogs don't typically like hugs has me wondering what kind, if any, of physical affection do dogs like from humans. Do they like to be petted? I so where? Are their universal things they all like Or is it dog specific. All 3 of my dislike hugs. When jake needs affection his body needs to be touching one of his humans and seems to like under his neck rubbed. Brisby wants to set near you but really does care to be touched. Pickles so far like to sit close and get his ears rubbed but that's it. So with exception to jake, I feel like my dogs don't like "human snuggling" much.
Curious about your thoughts and experiences.

Rubbing Dory's armpits is my only sure fire way to calm her down when she's all amped up.

But she loves everything else, too.

Armpits! Wow!

Well Oliver likes to have his body rubbed, anywhere is fine, loves to lean against you and rub his ears and neck...But his favorite is that you hold his paw, either front one while he is lying down nxt to you..Of course our arms fall off, but for him, we do it...DH will be in his recliner, and Oliver next to him, and he puts arm on the side of the chair, Oliver lays next to him and extends his paw and that is how they sit and watch tv...So cute...With me if I am lying on the couch he will lie down near me on the floor and hits me till I take his paw, then he will lay down and rest with me..If u think he is sleeping and let go of the paw, he is right there staring at you and hitting u with his paw as if to say, hey u stopped holding my paw, lol, so we do it all over again...He has a tremendous need to be close and have touching contact with us as much as he can, and we are happy to do it...

Oh dear! So cute!

Max loves to be touched everywhere, you can pet him anywhere even his tail. He loves to sit on my lap but he's so big now at around 70lbs, but he still tries. If I am laying on the couch watching tv he likes to lay on top of me and put his face against my face, again he's very heavy but I tolerate it because I love snuggling. He likes to sleep between my legs. He loves belly rubs, and he loves having the really curly hair around his neck finger combed. He especially loves being brushed and combed and he will let you brush and comb him for as long as you want to. He gets upset if I brush and comb the cat instead lol. He then sits with his head on my knee really close to the cat and tries to eat the kitty fur from the comb and brush or licks her head and makes her angry. The only time he doesn't want to be touched is if someone has food or is eating. Then he is trying to concentrate on the food (I think he thinks he has telepathy to make the food come to him) and does not want to be bothered. He always wants to be touching though. If I am on the computer he is sleeping at my feet with his head on my foot, he likes to hold paws as others have mentioned, really just wants to be touching all the time.

Ellie loves to snuggle, cuddle, kiss, hug, presses right up against us on the couch and in bed...she loves to be pet and loves belly rubs...definitely affectionate...and I am so glad...cause I love all of it and can't get enough of her sweet love:)

Traz likes to snuggle in the morning after he wakes up and at night before he goes to sleep.  He sleeps in a crate at night.  During the day he likes to have contact with my husband or I, usually by laying on our feet.  If he isn't up against us, he makes sure he is in the same room as one of us.  Traz enjoys petting, belly rubs and being scratched behind the ears too.  We love our boy :-)

Darwin likes being pet - but on his terms. ;-) He always enjoys a good ear scratch but selectively doles out when he'll come sit on your lap or be hugged. When he is so kind to grace you with his giant presence you don't complain about a 65lb dog sitting on your lap, but feel grateful. LOL

Roo and Tigger both like to snuggle, but Roo didn't really get into it until he was about 3 and Tigger at 5 is just now becoming a snuggler.

Roo likes to be petted constantly anywhere, belly is best.  Tigger loves to have his sides and belly rubbed and he is crazy about having under his ears rubbed.

Gordie and Clancy LOVE to be petted, especially in the tail area. I think they enjoy hugs and kisses and snuggles of most any kind.  Clancy also likes the top of his head scratched, while Gordie likes his back scratched.   I think they enjoy hugs and kisses and snuggles of any kind.  Ned is very self sufficient and wants affection on his terms. He is more of a 'hit and run' guy.  Jumping up by us for seconds, then jumping down.  He does like his ears rubbed.  I often give Ned kisses on top of his head and I think he tolerates that in understanding that it is MY way of telling him I love him.

Yogi loves to climb on my lap whenever I'm on the floor. He gives kisses and I think likes to receive. He stops whatever he is doing to be pet. It's funny at first when we got him, he didn't seem to care that much for being petted, but that has really changed in a few months! Loves his belly rubbed, around his ears, his neck, his hindquarters, his head, I guess about everywhere.
He walks by the end of the couch where my DH sits, then stops so my DH will drop his hand down and give Yogi a good rub down. He'll stay there as long as he's receiving attention.

He is also very much a cuddler at night in bed. He curls up next to either of us, sometimes lays down beside us and puts his head on our shoulders.

Oh yeah, he's a big cuddler
Bailey likes snuggling a lot, he likes when I pet him everywhere, but especially on his butt and on the root of his tail. He also likes belly rubs and ear massages.
