Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

So doodle friends. It has been nearly two months since we rescued Johnny from DRC and none could be more happier than we are as he truly is the most remarkable dog I've ever known. One small dilemma...no one seems to know exactly what he is??? My vet reckons he is a Portuguese Water Dog and so do a few people I meet at the dog park. I have been online and checked them out and yes, he does look similar, but his tail is docked and therefore, kind of resembles a poodle. His coat is not poodle though. It is very dense and thick and grows slowly. I am attaching two pics and hopefully, my keen-eyed dog loving friends can shed some light to this mystery. Whatever he is however, we could not love him any less as he truly is a gift from God.

I know I have seen DNA test kits at Petsmart.  Not sure how much they are, but that is one idea.  He is most certainly beautiful!
Thank you..we are very proud of him but I do think it is Petsmart he I come...
I think he's an F1B doodle of one kind or another. There are doodle breeders who dock their tails; Ann's Duke has a tiny little stub of a tail, and he is definitely a labradoodle.
He definitely does not shed at all...not even one single hair...So definitely a F1b if that is what he is...
whatever he is hes beautiful!
Aww...thank you. We think so too...Someone's loss was certainly our gain :)
Because of his brown eyes I say there is some lab in there.  His coat looks PWD like the one in my neighborhood.  As for doodles, Spud is an F1b with a coat thick enough to be a sheet or blanket. It is possible.  Poodles have two main variations in coats so this may be a coat you are not familiar with.    I agree, get the DNA kit and give it a try.
I'm going to do it this week.

Since i know Johnny had entropion, I thought we might get some hints by checking the Canine Inherited Disorders database for which breeds are most affected by the disease. There are a lot of breeds that are prone to it, including Labs and Goldens.

What breeds are affected by entropion?

This problem occurs in many breeds. It is particularly severe in the mastiff, bullmastiff, Shar pei, and chow chow.

Entropion is seen in the Akita, American Staffordshire terrier, Pekingese, bulldog, pomeranian, pug, Japanese chin, Shih tzu, Yorkshire terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, dalmatian, old English sheepdog, rottweiler, Siberian husky, vizsla, weimaraner, toy and miniature poodle. It is also seen in hounds ( basset hound, bloodhound), spaniels ( Clumber spaniel, English and American cocker spaniel, English springer spaniel, English toy spaniel, Tibetan spaniel), and sporting breeds (Chesapeake Bay retriever, flat-coated retriever, golden retriever, Gordon setter, Irish setter, Labrador retriever).

Thanks for pulling this up Karen. I am just amazed how many dogs are affected with this disorder. It really is a bugger as Johnny's eyes still constantly bother him...poor love. Also, the surgery has given him the squint eyed look instead of is gorgeous round eyes, but I am forever grateful for DRC for giving him the chance to lead a normal seeing-eye dog life and especially for letting us be his forever home :)

Wow--he is gorgeous! I think he is a doodle crossed back to a poodle--an F1B--or what I like to call a labradoodle-oodle! They may have been poodle people so docked his tail. I know that Schoodles (Schnauzer/poodle cross) have docked tails, be he doesn't look like one. He does look a bit like one of my pups--still too young to tell--but he is a mulitigen doodle/F1 cross.

Here he is--but he is only 6 weeks old. I imagine he will look like this as an adult.

What a darling coat and face. Johnny's is much coarser and tighter curl but the expression is certainly the same...:)
