I agree that doodles recognize other doodles. If we are at the beach, every other dog can come by, but when a doodle is on the beach, my dogs immediately are attracted to him/her. What is that about? How do they recognize another doodle?
About having more than one! We originally had a shepherd (my son's) and a standard poodle (my husband's). The shepherd died and the poodle was beside himself with grief. He had never spent a day alone in his life and came directly from his litter to the shepherd who adored him. I decided that I needed another dog and decided on a Welsh Terrier. I located a breeding pair and went there to check out the facility. The people had many different types of terriers and showed them. I put a deposit on a Welsh that had not even been born. When the litter was born, there was only one male and they said he was mine because I prefer male dogs. When he was three weeks old, he died. Back to step 1. My BIL told me about doodles and I went on line and started researching. I found three litters and picked the dog I wanted. He was available so I told the breeder to send him. The start of doodledom. He was the best dog ever. When the poodle was old and on his way out, we got a goldendoodle, and the labradoodle did not even seem to miss the poodle when he passed over the bridge. When the labradoodle died, the goldendoodle was so depressed, he would not even look out the window. He just sat by my feet - so our third doodle, this time an ALD. I got all my doodles on line and I know that is not the best way to find a dog, but these days with all the photos and websites it is just so easy. And I have them shipped to me by air - also just so easy. So far no problems and great dogs.
So, that is how we got into the doodles, and they seem to need a canine companion. I'm sure if they did not have their buddy, they would get more involved with me, but I like having two dogs. They seem to entertain each other and it is great for training. It has been very easy with all our dogs.
I have two doodles, and I am so glad that I do. However, I do think that either one of them would have been fine as an only dog. They both really want to be right with me, so even if you were to get 2 doodles, it doesn't mean that your sweet babies won't still follow you around everywhere. However, I know that there are lots of times that they just want to play together outside. I know they enjoy that so much. It is very cute. I do feel less pressure to play with them because they seem to get that all out themselves. Very convenient. When it's snuggle time, they both come to me! Don't feel like you HAVE to have two of them. That is a decision for later. Either way, you can't go wrong. I also agree with the comment about doodles recognizing other doodles. That is funny, but so true! Enjoy your doodle baby!
