We have the Invisible Fence brand fence and it has been great for us. We had great trainers come to the house to help us train the dogs and the customer service has been great. I am very happy with our decision to go with their company. There have been some recent discussions on Invisible Fencing and the types that DK users have. You might want to search that topic on this site and get some more info.
I have the Petsafe brand fence and absolutely love it. It was easy to install with help, I followed the instructions exactly, trained my dogs according to the directions and had not problem what so ever. I tried the collar on myself first because I would not put anything on my dogs that would cause them pain and I myself am a big baby when it comes to pain. It feels uncomfortable but not painful. Both Sasha and Oliver have only gotten to the vibrate part and backed off. My system has 3 stages, first is a beep, second is a vibrate and third is the zap. I have mine set to the lowest setting and both dogs know and respect the boundries. The key is to do the training exactly as the instructions say and you will have no problem. When I got the fence system my property was fenced on three sides but across the front of the house was no fence. I am a avid gardner and have a koi pond as well. I wanted to keep the dogs out of the pond and out of the garden so be best for me was the Petsafe fence. I now have my property completely fenced but still use the e-fence system because of the garden and pond. I have even chopped thru the wire twice while planting bushes and just twisted the wires back together, taped and burried them and was fine. The fence system works for me and my two doodles 110%.
If you're open to alternatives to an invisible fence, I know one that might save you some money. It would be too costly to fence in my entire back yard and my adoption contract prohibits invisible fences, so I went to Home Depot and bought a 100' roll of 4' high cattle fencing and posts. Total cost was about $118 and I installed it by myself in about 2 hours. Attaching it to a portion of the back of my house gave me an extra 24 feet of playpen area, so it's a nice size for two big dogs to romp around in.
