Zach had his first grooming appointment today. He started the morning looking like this:

I was hoping that she could take him down to 1 inch. But he had mats that I did not know about. I knew he had some under his chin, because he really hates having his face combed, but I thought I had really done a good job of staying on top of things. Apparently not, the groomer spent a lot of time showing me the areas of his coat that had mats that I was not aware of, and spent time teaching me the proper way to brush, comb and demat (is that a word) his coat, so I can keep up with it as it grows out. I've had short haired dogs for 20 years and never had a dog with a curly coat, so I learned a lot today, and Zach got a COMPLETE make over - From shaggy to sophisticated

A shout out to Lynn at Wags and  Whiskers in Albuquerque. Although it is short I think she did a great job and that he is a handsome Dood!

Handsome either way.  He looks pretty proud of himself in the second picture!
Zach looks great. Those mats are devious. Each time I groom my two I vow they will never get so bad again : )
What a difference!  The new look really makes his beautiful tail stand out!  He looks much taller!  Are you sure this is the same dog?  LOL

Yes, there is a word demat... not sure if it is in the dictionary but it is definitely used in the Grooming Group! ;o)

Zach looks very handsome. You have found a wonderful groomer to carefully explain the brushing and combing techniques for doodles.

I love when they are freshly groomed and look so proud and happy with themselves. I look at short as a very temporary phase as it rows back so quickly. And I love how their coats feel so soft when freshly cut. Zachary looks great and very dignified. Nice job
What a beautiful color he is!

Very nice job, love that she saved the tail. Daisy has been in this same situation, never again.

You are right he now has a very sophisticated look, handsome and happy.

Zach's haircut turned out great. I love the French Bulldog too in the top picture. I am a sucker for those Frenchies. Fudge mats too and it always seems like it happens overnight. I bet his new cut is softer too.
Zoey is like the kid who jumps up in down behind the local news camera to get into the picture. In at least half of Zach's pictures Zoey strolls into the field just as I click the picture.

Ha--she's a photo-bomber!

He looks great! And he seems to know it--he's definitely holding his head up high in the second picture! :)
He looks great--those mats close to the skin are tough to know about the first time--it is great that you got a lesson instead of a lecture--now you know and he will be long and curly again before you know it!
