Glad it has helped. If you use a dematter on this area it will thin but it won't show mistakes. If that doesn't work, try twisting his beard a little - not to hurt - and then use the thinning shears across or slanted on it.

Thank you for the pictures of trimming face esp muzzle area. I have been grooming Max for about 6 mths and wasn't quite sure how to trim this area, needless to say he sometimes looks lopsided!! Have also been thinking about using thinning shears for the muzzle area since it is so thick and is hard to keep clean and unmatted thought if it was a little thinner might help. Your thoughts?

One more thing: I forgot to say if you will click on the different pictures, they will get larger and you can see better.

Hello!
I found if I take a dog to a groomer, I take in pictures of how I want them to turn out. I have on my site how to groom a wavy fleece and a curly fleece face. You are welcome to copy and print out for your groomer. For the wavy fleece take a look at http://greengableslabradoodles.com/blog/2010/05/09/grooming-the-wav... Then for the curly fleece it is http://greengableslabradoodles.com/blog/2010/05/09/grooming-curly-f...
Rutland Manor has some great tips on grooming on its website.
What I have found to be very helpful with the wavy fleece coats is brushing them every couple of weeks. If there is a mat found, I take the scissors and cut down through the mat and then it brush out and you can't see where it was cut. For my curly fleece I brush them about once a week and do the same if there is a mat. If there is a bad mat, I like the dematters because they cut through in parallel sections and this make it easy to brush out.
We have some that stay rather long all the time and some we give summer cuts and then by October they have a nice length of coat as it starts to cool down. We do cut them down around the first of April through June. They love the water and it makes them so comfortable during the warm months.

I totally agree with Nugget's family! I changed groomers because I was always being told that there wasn'tmuch they could do because I let mats form--they just do! You can keep after them, but it's hard on you and the dog! My new groomer doesn't groom other doodles, so she asked me to tell her exactly what I wanted my AL (the white one) to look like. I told her I wanted the doodle head with the closer cut body for the summer, since the head is easier to keep from matting. I also kept her ears and tail long--my hubby calls her a bobble-head dog--but that is OK. At least she still looks like a doodle now. I have been happier with that look. It's really the head that gives them the right look, so, in my opinion, you should concentrate on getting that part the way you want it to look.

Ann-

First of all, I hope the groomer didn't make you feel guilty. Doods mat very easily and yes, in a perfect "doodle-centered" world they would get brushed at least 3 times a day....but we all live in the real world.

Nugget just got her summer haircut on Wednesday. She is short now, too. She doesn't so much look like a poodle but more like a broken coated lab. BUT, I have taken her to groomers where she has come out looking very much like a poodle. Now, there's nothing wrong with poodles, but these guys are not poodles. So, my advice, find another groomer who knows how to give a short haircut without making Missy look like "Fifi". I have actually taken to grooming Nugget most of the time myself, but get her professionally groomed about twice a year. Nugget will be pretty fluffy again in about a month. Her hair is now about 1/2 long and I expect it to grow about an inch a month.

I have found a groomer who comes to our house with a "grooming van" who, when I told him that he would have to cut out some mats, he said, "Hey she's a dog....she's going to get mats." No guilt complex whatsoever.....such a breath of fresh air compared to some groomers who make you feel like "bad doggy mom" if they need to cut out mats.

Missy will undoubtedly love her summer haircut as much as Nugget does...it's been so hot here this week she has needed it!

Take care-
Susan

Ann, Simon is a spiral fleece. I had to have him cut down to 1" about 5-6 weeks ago. His hair is now almost 2" long and it is in little spirals again -- except where he still has baby hair. His ear hair seems to be growing more slowly than his body, tho'.

Thanks for the tips,Marla. I guess Missy will be much more comfortable for the summer. Will look forward to an inch by the fall, Hope your back operation went well!

Hi Ann, I had a back operation mid February, no one brushed her. The groomer said that she had to be shaved, that was the beginning of March. I just brought her back to the groomer, seems like it takes a long time to grow back (it's maybe a little over an inch long now, ears & tail weren't shaved). Although if it was long now she would be very hot. The length is very easy to brush, but I hope it will be longer by the fall.

Missy May my Australian Labradoodle was taken yesterday to be groomed.
I brushed her everyday however being the owner of labs for the last 20 years I apparently did a very poor job.I was told she terribly matted. As a result I now have a dog who looks just like a poodle...... almost no hair. Can someone tell me how long it takes for hair to grow back!
