Hi. New to this group so I don't know if I'm being redundant in asking if you all have a tried & true way to prevent mats on your doodles. Axl has been groomed once at the beginning of the summer…Continue

Kim and Kashi-

The shaggy hair is also one of the reasons we picked a doodle too (the other reason was because of their temperament and their playfulness. I enjoy bathing and brushing Huff too.

Becky and Murphy-

You are welcome:) As long as you keep up I think he should be fine but a lot of doodle owners say that they mat overnight. Huff never really got matted like that. We never had to shave him down. I am not an expert on the puppy coat change because I don't remember Huff having such a major change in his coat but it could be because my dad used a zoom groom rubber brush on him and pretty much got rid of all the shedding hair that would have otherwise matted. He looked pretty scruffy between 4 yup until 6 months. I think that time must have been his coat change.

Kerri B.  -   I know how excited you must be.  We've had Kashi for about 6 months now.  I remember waiting for him to be old enough to pick up.  That is when I found this site actually.  Its so cool to be able to see all the different doodles.  I agree with you on the poodle thing.  We love Kashi's coat.  The shaggier the better!    I look forward to seeing pics of your puppy.  :)

I don't have my doodle just yet (Jul 30), but also prefer the longer look.  I know it's going to take a lot more work, but if I wanted the dog to look like a poodle, I would have gotten a poodle.  LOL.  Look forward to hearing tips on how to keep a shaggy pup pretty!  :)

I am so glad to see this group.  I love the long shaggy look.  I have had so many people ask me when i'm going to get Kashi shaved.  Never!  His coat does take a lot of work, but I actually enjoy bathing him, and brushing him out.  The shaggy coat was one of the reasons we picked a doodle.   I just can't imagine shaving it off!  :)

@Taylor,Bryce and Huff....thanks for the helpful hints...I've been trying to comb out Murphy everynight...he is definately starting to get little mats here and there....I REALLY want to prevent ever having to shave him down....I love the fluffy bouncy look!  Thanks again! :o)

It starts matting when their hair gets longer ( about 6mos). Huff stays pretty matt free when we bathe him once a week and brush him once to twice a week.

Hi everyone....Murphy is 4mos. old, and I've bathed him a few times...I keep reading about bad matting, and having to shave etc.  Can anyone tell me when that all might start, and any helpful hints on what to use and how often to brush/bathe??  Don't know if it's in just older dogs or what?  Please let me know of any helpful hints!  Thanks much!

Wow:) You don't usually see doodles with that long of hair I think. That's how it used to be when we took Huff to Petsmart, they gave him a haircut when we specifically asked for just a bath, do not touch his hair. We didn't go back again. Thanks:)

Wow 8 inches!! I think whatever way you do it he will better! I saw a doodle walking today and she said that she spends hours and hours on him and when she takes him to Petco for a bath they still mess him up I think his hair was at least 7 inches long so fluffy!! Can't wait for a picture-good luck Huff!!
