Monty goes to the groomer

I know I started this somewhere, cant find the post.......lost in cyber space?  Lost in my mind?  Lost during wine night?  lol

Anyhow, the last time at the groomers Monty was shaved to the bone.  I vowed that would not happen. He was about 4 inches, uh oh......the mats were coming back.  He fur is very thick and I was struggling to find enough time (hours and hours) to line brush the entire body.  I am constantly trimming his eyes, feet, toenails, backside......I'd had enough. I took him to a new "recommend groomer", she actually asked me how I wanted Monty to look!

Yesterday was his big day, by golly, this one is a keeper.  I've posted his before and after.  At first she commended me for doing a good job.  When I went to pick him up, she took her compliment back. :(  "you got him here just in time, tons of dead fur underneath, you were about to have a disaster on your hands"  She said it in such a nice way tho, and reminded me that these dogs are a learning curve.  She wants me to start combing him.  Really?  After I spent a bazillion dollars on brushes?  I think I will try the comb, but I still believe that if I put the time into his coat I'll like the brush better.

He looks great! I have to agree with your groomer about the comb though. I brush Darwin, then comb through him. For us the brushing is really preparation for the combing. I do it in small sections, and use a very fine, metal comb. If the comb goes through his hair, all the way down to the skin, then I know he's completely tangle free.

I have a discussion on the first group before the general discussions. I was saying that we should not refer to brushing at all. We should always say "comb your dog" and not mention the 'B' word. Your money is well spent on the brushes. You need them too.

It's just like Kay said. Brushing is only to prepare for combing.

Monty is absolutely beautiful with his new cut.   Wilson is also from Del-Frunessa's. He is a Juliet / DeBon Aire pup and he is 4 months old.  I brush him a couple time a week but I was not aware that I will need to comb him too.   Thanks for sharing that info and pics of your baby.

Wilson is very handsome.  He reminds me of Monty when he was younger.  We are very happy with our guy.

He looks beautiful..  However - the bad news is that we brush only to get the comb through the coat!  Sorry to burst your bubble but you need a quality slicker brush AND a comb.

He is beautiful!!!  our abbey just had to get shaved and i nearly threw up when i picked her up at groomers!!!!! Your other picture looks JUST like she did!!! I've decided to take her to groomers every 2 weeks if i have to so we won't go through the 'shaving' again. You think that will keep her in good shape? Or should I go every week? I' ve been brushing her hair (only hair is her ears and head) and I can't keep mats away!! I love her so much but I want my doodle back!!!!!! :)

I know what you mean about throwing up, thats exactly how I felt when Monty was shaved to the bone. He has very thick fur and it is time consuming to brush him.  I'm trying.  I set up another appt for 10 weeks, but it will require me to put in the time at home if I even hope to get close to 10 weeks.  I trim him all the time at home.  If you are struggling of course you can go to the groomers very often, but if Abbey is shaved right now, you can probably keep ahead of things for a lot longer on your own.  Good luck. :)

Oh, don't worry about shaving the dogs.  Just think of it as starting over and make a "New Year's resolution" to keep on top of the maintenance grooming.  I would say that every 10 weeks would be appropriate for grooming and more frequently than that is excessive.  And remember, the hair does grow back (and probably quicker than you anticipated).
