I am also not a guardian, but my husband and I are considering becoming one. I thought some of you might be able to offer some insight...

In our search for a labradoodle we have been presented with the opportunity to be a guardian for an 8 month old red labradoodle who will be used as a stud for a breeder about 2.5 hours (by car) away. We are considering this because this dog has been the basis for what we've been looking for in a puppy. His temperament is incredible, he's the right size, he's gorgeous. But I have some reservations based on the following: 1) what kind of behavior can I expect from a fully intact male? We have 2 little boys, ages 3 & 5. Will there be excessive humping, aggressiveness, etc.? 2) Will I be putting the dog at a higher risk for testicular or prostate cancer since he would not be neutered early on? 3) Should I anticipate any behavior issues that will be more of a challenge to correct since he is already 8 months old? (i.e. chewing, dominance, etc.) 4) Will there be a noticeable lack of bonding in not getting him as a puppy? 5) How often should I expect to either "loan" him back to the breeder or take him to the vet for semen collection?

Thanks!

Hey Kristie, I am fortunate that the breeder lives 10 minutes away. SO we actually breed the girls in my yard (the girls seem to relax better) and then so far I have brought them to the breeders within a day of whelping. Meadow had her first puppy in the back seat of my truck, Opal had a few sleep overs first. Both girls were with the breeder for 4-5 weeks. I visited meadow every other day and Opal I left for the first 2 weeks on vacation and then saw her every 3 or 4 days - she is much more comfortable at the breeders than Meadow was. The girls then commuted to work daily for a week. Opal had a litter November 11th and so came home a week before Christmas. My girls go to the breeder for grooming and see her quite regularly... so switching between homes does not appear to be to difficult to them. It really gives me a chance to focus on the one I have at home. They miss each other a lot.

Hello. I have two Labradoodles. A Cafe male called Milo who is desexed and a Caramel female called Fudge who is in a breeding program. She has just been away as she was in season a few weeks ago. We are eagerly awaiting to see if she will be with puppies in a few months. She has already had one litter and they were absolutely beautiful, but I think all doodle puppies are beautiful. Glad I have joined this group. Just wanting to know how do others cope when their doodles go off for a few weeks and then are back and then off for another 6 weeks? How do their doodles settle? We actually only picked Fudge up today and she has been away for nearly three weeks (we had to leave her for an extra week as we went away on holidays) and she is taking her time to settle back in. Hopefully she will be back to normal tomorrow. I suppose the 2 1/2 hour trip back to our home doesn't help as she travels terribly!!

HI all!! I am finding this site quite interessting! I have been guardian to a cream Aussi Labradoodle for a year and a half - I also own her sister. Both dogs have been through one litter a piece (14 & 9 puppies each)... my guardian dog the latest with puppies born November 11th. I have a great relationship with the breeder and am really enjoying the experience. I would love to guardian more but I have been told a difficult choice would have to be made - husband or dog. Ha ha ha.

Can I ask you guys what you feed your puppies in particular? What brand of food do you use for dogs & puppies?

Hi, Thanks Vicky for inviting us. We are new guardians to a 14 week old Chocolate/white parti Labradoodle. Her name is Dezzie! She is so cute and extremely smart. We also have a 9 month old Standard Chocolate/Cafe male labradoodle, Koda.

Hi fellow Guardian Families! I am about 4 weeks into being a Guardian and loving every minute of it. My sweet girl is named Bella and she has been a wonderful experience so far. Bella is a Standard Parti Poodle and has learned 9 commands in 2 weeks. She also had to learn her name as she came to me not really having a name! So she is a very smart young lady. My husband and I just love her. Our daughter Carli bonded with her immediately. Carli is out of state in College so we frequently SKYPE will Carli so she can see Bella and Bella can see her. It's fun!
