Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I have a 13 week old F1B goldendoodle that her hair is terrible looking,,,, long in some places, short in other places. Her hair is thin also. Very very long legs, very ackward looking.  Do they go through a ugly stage before there hair comes in thick? She is also thin, no worms or anything.   My other goldendoodle didnt look like this at her age. I was just wondering if any ones goldendoodle went through a awkward stage?

Hi, I would never call your pup awkward, she is darling. Owen grew hair on his face very slowly. I was so anxious for his face to fluff up. Now it is more like a wire-haired dog than Kona's fluffy face (his coat is wavy fleece/wool). I would definitely say he went through an awkward stage. He's seven months now and cuter than ever. He looks completely different from his half brother though. I spent lots of time going through DoodleKisses photos looking for another doodle that looked like him when they were puppies so I could see if he was going to look like a doodle when he got older.
Thank you,,,,, i see all these fluffy 13 week old doodles and my other doodle has so much hair, I was beginning to worry.  You cant see on the picture, but she has long strands of hair sticking out beyond her thin coat.  We love her to death, but was concerned she didnt look like the other doodles that we see.  Her legs are really long and thin,  Im sure she will grown into her legs!! LOL
There is no 'one look' for goldendoodles and labradoodles. We see doodles all the time and they're all so very different looking. Your puppy will grow into her looks as she matures. Also, once you start clipping/grooming, that will change her appearance significantly. Lucy doesn't look anything like she looked at 13 weeks (you can go to my page and check out my photos... progressing from little pup to now). She's curlier and lighter and of course she has a more defined doodle look now that she gets regularly groomed. Those long hairs you mention will probably be the curlier hairs of her coat. And those long legs, well, Lucy has long legs too and I think they give her a stately look. Don't worry :) Your puppy is cute in her own way!

Gavin's coat was not too thick and doodly at 13 weeks, but it caught up.  His coat is a looser wave, sheds a bit and is not as thick as some here, but it is much easier to maintain it seems than many.

 Gavin is an F1 Goldendoodle.

P.S. I think your girls is adorable.  Lovely colour.

What a big transition.  He is so handsome!
She is adorable! My mother's goldendoodle, Daisy Mae, went through an extremely ugly and awkward stage. Her puppy coat shedded in pieces. Some of her hair was straight; some of her hair was curly. I've heard that doodles go through 15 coat changes during their first year. After Daisy was a year old, her hair became her permanent coat with soft waves. No worries! It's just a stage.

My Connor is an F1 goldendoodle. People always comment on what a pretty dog he is. He came to live with us at 18 weeks...

He looked a lot more golden retrieverish. He had brothers and sisters that looked like big fluffy cream doodles.

Connor is now almost 4 yrs old. His coat is soft waves and is shaded gold/red. He is also the sweetest, kindest and funniest dog imaginable. In fact, he is featured in the 2011 IDOG Calendar for April/Community Service 'cause he's a certified Therapy Dog....

The long hairs are either guard hairs or if they are more wiry, they are called kemp. That is the more poodle part of the coat. It may go away as her coat matures. The long legs are from the poodle part also. It will take 2 years for her to get her full adult coat. Rosie is just precious, btw. :-)

Thank you so much for showing me pictures!    I do feel alot better! LOL

Your doodles are absolutely beautiful!!

I don't have much help to offer, but I think she looks adorable.  After seeing all the coat changes below who knows what the outcome will be, but either way she is a lil cutie.  Maybe a flat coat?  Isnt' that when it's more retrieverish then fluffy.  Crazy all the differences in these dogs.
I have a hard time thinking any doodle pup is ugly...and yours is no exception.  I think she's pretty cute =)  I think she will even out as she matures.  It looks to me like her face hair will grow out a bit more.  It's entirely likely her coat will have a different texture on different parts of her body, though...my doodle does.  Curly thighs, soft fleecy head and chest, rougher back, sparser legs, but overall when you look at him he looks fine and fairly even.
How is your puppie looking now if u don't mind me asking
