Hi,
Cooper will be 5 months old this week, and I came home to a big scare today.
He has a bit of anxiety and broke some of his baby teeth off from chewing at his cage(we no longer put him in the cage).
We have been keeping him in an empty spare bedroom.
After walking him when I got home today I noticed blood all around his mouth so I checked his teeth out.
What I found was very disturbing. It looks as though his gums a cut open with blood Around few teeth. I also noticed something that looks like a major issue- it seems like one of his canines is coming in wrong and maybe broke at the tip. Pictures posted of each side right side looks concerning.

Please help if you have had any experience with this? Am I freaking out or is this normal?

I think you should take Cooper to vet.

That doesn't look normal to me at all. Oscar broke off one of his lower baby canines at 10 weeks old. He also had Base Narrow Canines, and we had planned on having his lower canines removed anyway to make room for his adult canines to come in naturally, but we had to take him in earlier due to the broken tooth. He was in acute pain with the pulp chamber being exposed. How is Cooper behaving? From the pictures it appears he allows you to touch his face. Oscar did not want his face touched. If Cooper doesn't appear to be in pain I would suggest you make an appt. with a veterinarian dog dentist and get his teeth looked at as soon as possible. If he is in obvious pain it may be more of an emergency situation.

He's been acting normal. He was bringing me his ball and wanting to play fetch, running around, etc. He ate his food which is hard, so I would think if any pain, it's not excruciating.
Thanks for your opinion. I'll call the vet in the morning.
I second a Vet's opinion. His gums are pretty swollen, but that's not that unusual. The blood is pretty normal too....I just don't like the look of that one tooth....I guess it's the broken one? It looks like some of his adult teeth are breaking the gums, before him losing his baby teeth...that may or may not be a problem. Double sets of teeth not that unusual, but need to be taken care of.
Freezing a wet washcloth for him to chew on will bring him some relief for those swollen gums.
A visit to the vet would make sure there are no signs of infection and a good evaluation of what is happening with him. If you mix PB2 (powdered lower calorie peanut butter) with some whipped cream cheese and stuff it in a Kong, it can be frozen before you give it to him. Get two going so you always have one frozen to hand out as needed. This will help relieve the pain and some swelling and he can chew like mad on them. Best of luck to you both!
Poor Cooper! (And you, ugh!) Please follow up and let us know what vet says...
I don't know if this pertains in your case, but I recently read that some dogs will go frantic with worry when their "human pack" leaves and that is because the dog thinks it is the leader/parent. I only mention because you said you came home to find him this way, and perhaps he was worried about you! Good luck.
Thanks for all of your input! After doing a little research it seems both of cooper's canines are retained. This is where the adult teeth start to come in before they have lost their baby ones which causes the new teeth to come in incorrectly. I called the vet first thing this morning and will be taking him in.
I think it may be a good idea to also talk to a veterinary dentist and see if they are on the same as your general practice vet.
This happened to my son, lol. They had to pull the baby teeth. Ka-ching$!! :)

I hope all goes well for Cooper. Its hard to tell from the pictures, but is the one that's broken an adult tooth? You definitely want to see a veterinarian who specializes in dog dentistry, as it appears the adult teeth are growing in incorrectly. I hope Cooper doesn't require doggie orthodontics, but only a specialist can determine the best course of action. Good luck!

I think it is time to talk to your vet and talk to a veterinary dentist.
