Cooper is 14 months now and has been sleeping in his pen just perfectly through the night since 3 month old!!! Now all of a sudden, he's whining bloody murder starting at 5am 4weeks ago. I thought it was because the sun is coming up earlier and it's getting brighter out. Two weeks ago, he started the whining routine at 4am. Now I'm not happy. Tonight, the routine started T 2:30. Ok, now I'm pissed. Nothing really has changed except for my exhaustion. Any advice from any one out there.

Oy. I'd be pissed, too. Sorry I don't have any good advice but I'm following this one as Rip woke me at 2am last night. I think the unusual wake up was due to some wild cats fighting loudly behind my neighbor's house - crazy sounding!. Maybe he didn't have enough exercise yesterday, too. I will have a cup of coffee for ya and hope we get some good help ;) Nighty night...yawn...

That's very strange - we've had that happen a couple times when Angus was having tummy issues. He would whine and then I would take him out and he had to poo a lot and then came back in. Is there a possible medical issue going on that might account for this? If not, I'd recommend a TON of exercise during the day (we like doggie daycare for this), so that he's really super tired when he gets home. Angus is usually a restless sleeper, but on days where he goes to daycare, he is out for the night until the morning. Sorry you're having a tough time. I hope you figure out the issue soon! So hard to be exhausted all the time :(

I think I'm in the minority on this forum, but we crate our dog at night - her crate is in the mud room, covered with a blanket, and we turn out the lights and shut the doors to the mudroom as soon as she's crated at 9pm.  Our trainer told us three days after we brought Ginger home to put her crate where we couldn't hear her barking and ignore everything after lights out.  So unless Cooper seems ill, I'd ignore it.  If the noise bothers you and you have a big enough house, move Cooper's pen farther from your bedroom.

Loki did that when he was younger, he was sleeping through the night at 3 months and around 7 months decided that wasn't for him anymore and I just laid in bed and ignored him and he stopped after a bit (maybe a week?). I kind of felt that I knew he could hold it through the night and therefore he was fine. The noises he made weren't fearfully or pained just attention i think. Good luck! I feel your pain, I just brought puppy number two home so every 2-4 hours it's a party regardless of the time of day or night lol!
Probably worth a try in trying new things. Any reason why he is penned/ crated? He may be perfectly happy outside his pen, but maybe in the bedroom with the door closed , just to see if he is trustworthy.
