Volunteering is kind of like teaching. Some of us work well with little children, some with teenagers, some with special needs children. There is a niche for everyone to perform a service and feel comfortable. Since I no longer teach, I want to be of service in another venue. My niche is calling the shelters to get information on a possible doodle, picking the doodle up and transporting it to a foster home. Skip and I have driven in bumper to bumper traffic to meet a foster. We have traveled several hundred miles. It makes us feel good to help out, but this is nothing compared to the dedication and loving care a foster family gives a matted, mess of a dog. Their reward? They see the transformation; they see the fear leave and the love enter those beautiful doodle eyes. They see the healing - and they are the ones that created the environment for it to happen. The DRC needs volunteers, especially for fostering. It takes a very special someone to see past the mats and the fleas and the fear - to see what can be. Please take a minute to think whether you might be one of those special people.
Here is the dog I am NOT picking up tomorrow because there is no foster home.
What he could look like - and apparently did the FIRST time he was picked up as a stray:
What he now looks like - guess the shelter didn't even want to take a current picture. Can you see why? And his owner, who cared enough to pick him up the first time, then let him run the streets and get into a mess - you can't even see his eyes!
The kids are sad they didn't get to come play at the park afterwards. :-(
Jolene is always up on doggy events. I nominate her to let the rest of us know when and where this stuff is happening. :-}
I only get the LA Times, and don't read much of that, either. Bummer. I could have at least met you all at the dog park. The puppies would have loved it
