Thanks Lynda! When I first started teaching the only job I could get in the 80s was in a catholic School. I had 36 kindergarten students in my class - FULL day - NO aides, and the poor kids had to sit in those old wooden desks w/ the chairs attached and had no playtime at ALL and to top it all off - "Sister Mary Underwear" listened in on the speaker to make sure everyone was behaving... including me! I left after 3 years, making $9,000 - I would have rather worked in Macy's and been better off! Then I started teaching where I still am today... times are better now! THANK GOD!

Staying in for the heat- that is funny. Our kids never seem to get outdoor recess during the winter because it is too cold with the wind chill. It makes winter seem very LONG!

Issues- that was my last year's class too..... and we also warned our second grade teachers. It looks like this year won't be much better in regards to issues. My daughter did K. bus duty last year and she already warned me by saying "Good luck with that group!" :) I've been doing reading groups with the DRA leveled books (our school is lucky to have lots of leveled books) during my center time in previous years, but now I'm trying the "Daily Five" which is more like a reading workshop I think. The kids are taught how to choose a book on their level and do read to self, listen to reading, read with partner, work with words/spelling, read to someone, as well as work with the teacher during a small group. I went through my books that I will let the kids choose from for Daily 5, and for now just organized them as beg, easy, medium and challenging. I didn't have time to do DRA leveling on all of them. The program is new for me, so we'll see how it goes. Good luck with your class! You'll have to keep me posted on how it goes!

I have you all beat -- I have over 800 students -- teach art. I think this will be my last year teaching full time. I am going into my fourth week with students ---it's been over 100 degrees and humid. Most days we are on heat advisory so the kids don't get recess outdoors.
I'm a block from school so I come home at noon to check on my doods. :-)

We used to have 20 kids, but for the last few years we actually have been "maxed out" at 27-28 give or take the week... We are now trying to incorporate Reader's Workshop (do yo guys have that?) and it calls for leveling all books - it's so hard to set up....UGH! "ISSUES"...THAT was my class LAST year... soooo many 'issues' the first grade teachers warned us before they came to us and they were right! Whew! Hoping this year's group is better... we shall see! Good luck!

I bet it was nice to have some help! I get to leave a lot of things up, so classroom set up isn't so bad. I changed a few things around this year and am trying out the "Daily Five" reading approach, so I spent a lot of time organizing books and shelves for that. How many students do you have? I have 25. The last 5 years or so I've been blessed with a low class size of only 20 or so. I know 25 isn't considered a lot, but 5 more bodies really does make a difference. Plus this group coming up has a lot of issues (behavior, medical, learning challenges, etc) I hope you enjoy your last days of freedom!

I hear ya' . I like that - Never done till June"! LOL
I teach 2nd... this is my 11th year in 2nd... I taught K for 7 years, and 3rd for 9... and for the FIRST time EVER my DH actually came in to help set up with my 2 sons - 17 and 12. We took 3 1/2 hours to complete what usually takes me 3 days! Now DH KNOWS first hand "why it takes me so long". We have to strip the walls and bulletinboards every June, only to redo it again 8 weeks later - ugh! But it's all up and looking good! The calendar is crazy this year due to the Jewish holidays.

I teach first grade. This will be my 18th year of teaching, and my 15th in first grade. This is our first year that we have PD days the week before the kids. Normally we are just required to come the day before for "Teacher work day". I've already put in a lot of hours setting up, writing their names on everything, etc, but as you know, you never feel like you are really done with anything- until June. :) What grade do you teach?

I'm never ready to go back... good thing I LOVE my job! LOL It's just so tough going back after such a long break - but can't complain 'out in the real world" I finally finished my room today, last minute set ups can be done Tuesday after prof/dev... Angie - what grade do you teach???

I have my first "official" teacher day tomorrow, but of course I've already been in the classroom setting up, and working from home. We have Prof. Dev. mtgs on Weds. and Thursday and the kids start on the 7th. I'm not ready to go back!
