I started back to school (taking classes) yesterday and it is so much nicer having someone else doing the class orientations. I just sat back and enjoyed being a student. I will still be doing the beginning of the year language testing and subbing as needed, but taking classes is so much more enjoyable than teaching them. The pressure is off!

I go back on the 17th for meetings . . . . and start on the 21st. Of course, I will go back tomorrow (8/10) to start getting my room together. I have mixed feelings - it is fun to go back and see staff members and kids again, but I will certainly miss my doodle! This was our first summer together and he has enjoyed having the whole family at home each day.

Welcome Sue and Beth. Everyone working in education needs a break so that they can be fresh for the students in the fall, but I think those of us teaching special needs kids, really need to take time to smell the flowers so to speak, so that we can rethink our individualized approaches because often we have had the same students for several years and don't want to get stale with them.

Hi all of you new to the group. Everyone enjoy those waning days of summer.

I don't go back until Sept 1 but I have been doing planning for days already.
We have a quite number of special ed teachers in this group.... What you do is so important .... My sister, who was as a child was special ed kid (tortured by her school experience) passed away suddenly about a month ago. She spent much of her life wishing she was like everyone else, she lived a very marginal life until several years ago when she met and fell in love with a man (also a special ed kid) who really saw her potential and for the first time in her life she felt "normal". She began to grow and the last few years of life she was working helping other learning disabled people at her local community college and had a B+ average. She was 49 when she died.
Where I am going with this... We as teachers have the power to recognize the possibility in all children. We have the power to help children find the strengths which may be hidden deeply within. I will try to remember my sister every day when I go to into my classroom this year. We, can change sombodys future.
