Time to go back to work!!
Lynda, your garden is so wonderful. When I was a school secretary, our school had a garden and a goat. The kids had so much fun and learned so much.
Here in Pittsburgh, there is a project called " Edible school yard". If you submit the application and selected, they will come and design and construct the veggie garden for the school with no cost!! All of the materials and labors are paid and done by the volunteers. I really want to apply to this project but no bite yet....
Yes, Cathy, they absolutely love it when they can harvest and eat their own crops. The teacher told me today that half the class stayed at their seats to eat their salads when they had story time. Several ate every bit! And that is surprising with radishes. They were sliced and sprinkled with kosher salt so that made them a little bit different.
Kyoko, keep trying. Use my photos if you like and I can send you more. We replanted today and the new crop should be coming up by the time we get back to school in January. My new classes begin January 20 and 21. The book "Square Foot Gardening" explains how to keep it simple and get the best utilization of seeds, water, and soil. If you don't have planter boxes, that is the best way to start. I had planter boxes made at two of the schools where I worked and everything was set up for gardening. Now the classroom teachers just don't have time for gardening. A few are out there, but with huge classes and so many requirements it makes it almost impossible.
This is awesome.... We have this beautiful spaces between the building, and I would love to have garden like this... ( I think we talked about that when you came to Pittsburgh...) I have presented this, but no one important (LOL) bite the idea ... :-(
I downloaded some photos from our gardening experience earlier this week and thought I would share them here. The garden was planted in September (Square Foot Gardening), harvested on Monday (December 16) and we ate the produce from the garden on Tuesday (December 17). We will replant tomorrow for our winter garden. The kids love taking care of the garden, harvesting, and of course eating.
AND, Cathy, yes, lots of chocolate. It keeps me going.
Hey, Cathy, it is almost over for 2013. We have a little fall garden that we harvested on Monday, ate a totally raw salad on Tuesday, and will replant seeds on Thursday. It is ongoing here in California, but we will plant winter crops on Thursday. I am teaching two gardening classes in January & February (at two different schools) and will enjoy the little break before school starts up again. It is wonderful being retired and just teaching what and when I want.
Thank Goodness!!!! My room is a disaster from making gifts for families, wrapping gifts for each other (behind privacy shields), making cards for our volunteers, AND continuing to have reading, writing, and math blocks and interventins for reading and math. Our party is tomorrow. Not sure who the crazy person was who scheduled Santa (doing RIF distributation), Pajama Day, and a Christmas Party ALL on the same day!!!!! I will surly need Doodle Therapy when all is done.....and LOTS of chocolate!!!
