How exciting Tara! You're almost at Gotcha Day! What an adorable puppy. A name will come. I really enjoy it when a dog's name means something special to the owner.
Hello! Thought I'd add a comment here :) My name is Tara and I'm a mama to four kids and soon to be a mini golden doodle. Still working on name but we will pick her up Nov 21st!
Hello everyone, we put our deposit down on a English Golden Doodle puppy a few months ago and should find out this week if the pregnancy is confirmed. The wait is so brutal, but I see it is not just me based on this group. This will be our first time having a puppy/dog so we are very excited but will also need lots of advice.
Jaxon- the crate we have has a partition that you can put in to make it smaller when they are a puppy. We got it from Amazon. Check out Midwest Life stages. Ours is just a mini so I haven't looked into the really big crates.
Hello! We are expecting our F1B Standard Golden Doodle to come home in November, and I am starting to get a list together for what we need. I am wondering what to do about a crate. I have heard a small crate in the beginning helps with potty training, but we will need a large crate once pup grows. What are you all doing about crates? What size should I put on the list to look for? Thanks in advance. :)
For those of you waiting for your new puppies, I just want to say it will be worth it. We are having so much fun with our new pup despite a lot of challenges. My husband said he did not think we had laughed this much together in years. We had our first grooming and I loved the groomer we found. No shaving! She listened to our wishes. We told her we will shave in future if needed as her coat changes but for now we want to try scissor cutting and brushing. She strongly suggests her doodle clients who want to keep long coats be on a schedule of bathing and grooming. We've agreed to try it. She's very reasonable and will keep your dog if you work until you can pick them up. Many of the groomers here want them picked up quickly which I would love to do but can't. That was forcing me into groomers tied to doggie daycares and those were not the best doodle groomers. So, this seems like a good compromise. She did a great job and the pup was happy! So, for those of you anticipating new arrivals keep up the happy thoughts but realize it is going to be a LOT of work in between the laughs.
Hmmm, good question. There is so much out there. For me, if you decide to get pet insurance, there are pros and cons of that decision, do it as early as you possibly can. I waited until we had the dog in hand. Well there is a 14 day waiting period on our policy for illness which becomes a preexisting condition. So now we are stuck with her current issues being classified as preexisting for any further events. I think had I activated it while she was still with the breeder I could have avoided this situation. May vary with different policies.
All the videos I watched online from every trainer were helpful. I just used the free ones so far. I am getting a few at home consultations with a trainer then following up with some group classes later. Just google any puppy question you have and there are so many options.
My favorite book ended up being Puppy Problems, No Problem by Brenda Aloff, It comes with a DVD. I am working my way through it with my dog. I read it all the way through ahead of time and now am doing it step by step with my dog.
As far as supplies, it depends on your situation but I ordered an obscene amount of puppy toys and I have used them ALL. She is really nippy and we need something in every room and outside within reach quickly to redirect that....I am crating. I know not everyone does that, but I have also reserved special toys just for crate time.
My only other hint would be to give serious thought before changing the food your breeder started the puppy on. I changed it and I wish I had not created another variable in trying to sort out her GI issues.
