Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
This group is for those of us with puppies or dogs who look far more like the Golden or Labrador halves of themselves than the Poodle half. This group is for us to recognize the Poodle traits that shape our dogs while sharing experiences.

Great suggestions thanks so much, I'll let you know how it goes.
That's good that it wasn't from your dog.
I do it as I wrote earlier. I like to have enough fluid to squish around. Then I dry it a bit. My dogs don't like it and shake themselves afterward but they don't really despise it I think. If I never did anything to the dogs that they didn't like they would be in big trouble with infections and matts etc. The little short hairs are fine and I would leave them. If that's all you have since fall I doubt you will have a problem with the hair. Believe you and she will feel better when it's done regularly.
Here's a tip on using the cleaner that may be easier for you and for Josie. My vet showed it to me. Saturate a cotton pad with the solution, gently push the cotton into the ear (not too far down), and gently rub and massage all around the ear opening. If you saturate the cotton with enough solution, it will ooze out of the cotton into the ear canal, and feels less "startling" tyo the dog than squeezing it in directly from the bottle.
The photos of the hair are from another member's dog, not mine. :)
Your right; I don't do anything with her ears except wipe the outside, I didn't know I had to. In the fall I used a cleaning solution with the nozzle. She hated it, threw her self on the floor; then outside and kept rubbing her ears on the ground. twisting and turning. I realize that she was trying to get the fluid out of her ears, but that was the last time I did it. Her reaction kinda startled me. I didn't realize though that the poodles get the hair in their ears. I am shocked by the hair pieces that were removed from your dog's ears. I have looked in Josie's ears today, I see lots of little short hairs? is that normal or do they keep growing when she gets older. She is 9 months now. I have also called a groomer and she will see Josie, but not till Tuesday.
When she comes in after her walk tonight I will use the cleaner with the nozzle, any tips? Will she get used to it eventually and stop spaazing out?
I absolutely agree. It sounds like Cathy's dog's ears have never been really cleaned. A recipe for disaster. I sniff my dogs ears from time to time and if they smell even a little yeasty even I know it's cleaning time. It really is not a big chore.
I don't know if my poodles hated it or not, lol, the groomers always did it. But it needed to be done, whether they liked it or not. This is one of the things I love about having a shedding dog with silky straight hair, no ear stuff.
But getting back Cathy's comment, if the ears are greasy or there is an odor, chances are something needs doing with the ears. It's probably not related to how often the dog is bathed or bathing in general.
Impossible to see down there I agree. But the dogs ears have been fine with cleaning about every two weeks. Rex the poodle had awful infections but once he came to live with me he did well with regular cleaning. He did have the hair pulled at times and he hated it.
It doesn't look like he has much hair down in the canal, but you really can't see by this picture. I know you take good care of your dogs, so I'm sure Luca's ears are fine, but this really is an issue with poodles and most poodle mix dogs. That whole long twisted tail part from that photo I posted was hidden down in Ollie's ear canal. You could never have seen it, but by pulling the tuft that was visible, the rest of it came out, too.
F, you are lucky. Most of the dogs in this group have more "retrieverish" coats and probably don't have a lot of woolly hair in their ears. But I know you have non-shedding ALDS. Here is a picture of what Amy's groomer took out of Ollie's ears recently. Look at the "tail" ends from down in the ear canals, and you can see why the hair needs to be pulled from most poodles' ears:
