Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
This group is for those of us with puppies or dogs who look far more like the Golden or Labrador halves of themselves than the Poodle half. This group is for us to recognize the Poodle traits that shape our dogs while sharing experiences.

I was looking back through past comments, and wanted to hear some follow up on some of the doodles that were still going through their puppy coat changes! Did anyone's doodle "doodle out" more? And for the shedding.... any hopes on it slowing down after one? (a girl can have hope, right?)
Willow is six months now. When I got her, she was a straight coat puppy with some curl on her ears. Now her ears have long straight hair, and the hair on her body is a wavy, curly look. Her legs have started to grow some longer straight hair, and her facial hair is finally coming in and looking pretty goofy. She is at an awkward stage right now!
And she sheds like CRAZY! I brush and brush, and she'll wiggle through my legs, and I'll be covered in hair. I just ordered a furminator from amazon. Can not wait for it to get here!
Monty Moose also has the straighter hair, but sheds very little....certainly nothing like my female Golden (who is a lighter shedder than most other Goldies). I have a small slicker, but only have to empty it once each time. He is about to hit the 6 month mark, so maybe it will get worse as he loses his puppy coat....we will see. Also...do stores carry the Furminator or do I have to order one of these online?
Hi Cathy - As you can see there are quite a few golden retriever-ish doodles. Instead of "goldendoodle" maybe we should call them "golden retroodles". LOL
You usually do see more shedding between 6 and 12 months as they lose their puppy coats and get their adult coats, but it isn't going to get a lot lot better in my experience. My labradoodle sheds pretty heavily year round, day in and day out.
New member to this group. I am so glad I found you. I was starting to wonder if there were any other straight haired Doodles. My Josie is 9 months old and has been shedding a lot for the past 2-3 months. The furminator brush is amazing. We have to vacuum daily to suck up the hair balls. Does this tend to slow down when she becomes older? Do they tend to shed more at certain times of the year?
Hi Lynda, As you can see Dillon is in good company. Murphy is a seasonal shedder too. She really tapered off last summer but is now shedding quite a lot. For us the furminator once a week with daily brushings does help. We have hardwood floors that are the same color as she is so we're lucky, LOL.
I think the Furminator works better for dogs who "blow" their coats twice a year, where the heaviest shedding is seasonal. For those like mine who just shed all day every day year round, I agree that it doesn't seem to help. Brushing every day does help get some of the hair into the brush and then the garbage instead of on the furniture and floors, though. :-)
Our Maggie (double doodle) sheds like CRAZY! I have a furminator and it really doesn't seem to make much of a difference. My husband is the vacuum meister and we just deal with it. Maggie is 10 months old and is now 60lbs and I wouldn't trade her for anything!
MY Jack sheds just like a purebred retriever, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We have learned to live with it. Brushing a lot helps. Fish oil is a wonderful supplement and will help with dry skin and coat and overall health, but it won't stop shedding. Dogs who shed are going to shed, no matetr what. That's their hair growth cycle, it's genetic, and you can't change it.
Hi Lynda - a lot of doodles do shed, especially the ones with straighter hair (like Luna). You should invest in a shedding brush (I use the Furminator when Luna sheds seasonally) and just do a quick grooming every day. It really cuts down on the loose hairs that land up all over the house!
