Where's the Poodle in my Doodle?

This group is for those of us with puppies or dogs who look far more like the Golden or Labrador halves of themselves than the Poodle half. This group is for us to recognize the Poodle traits that shape our dogs while sharing experiences.

A breeder that confident in shedding would actually send up a big red flag to me.

Jacqueline, can you post a photo? F1's are generally not all open-faced. Just curious, what kind of "papers" could they have? As a mixed breed they are not pedigreed. I have an F1b that is a heavy shedder. Because of her size, I would say she sheds less than a golden but not for any other reason than that she is smaller. I don't see how the breeder can be confident. Especially since this is a multigenerational puppy, it would be impossible to tell you the amount of shedding.

If the doodle is flat coated then I would say very likely to shed heavily.  Our Luna shed a lot but very rarely had much of a doggy smell to her, she usually smelled pleasant.  I think the shorter coat helped keep her from smelling, less hair to trap moisture and particles.

Apologies for posting this the wrong way, hopefully this way is right!!

Hi! I’m considering a multi-gen Australian Labradoodle puppy that has an open face, so looks more like an F1 and has a hair coat. This apparently is rare but can happen because of recessive genes.  The breeder is confident that shedding will be minimal, much less than a lab, since she is in fact a multi-gen AL with papers etc. Does anyone have one of these? Is shedding truly minimal? How about doggy odor (breeder is nose-blind and isn’t sure!)

Thank you so much for your help!!

Luna is beautiful and yes, I believe she will have a scruffy Doodle coat. She does have facial furnishings.

Luna is 10 weeks old, and apart from a few curls behind her ear and under her neck, she doesn't look like a doodle! She has very soft straight puffy fur, a bit scraggly and scruffy looking. There are "wings" sprouting under her eyes, but not sure if it's facial furnishing or not. Just curious if she's going to doodle out!

What do you think? First photo is Luna at 7 weeks, second one is at 9 weeks.

Pita is absolutely adorable.

Hello everyone! Happy to show you all that Pita is now 7 months and is starting to doodle out. She has thick wavy hair and her facial furnishings are coming in like crazy.

Leasha, I think Summer looks like a labradoodle. It’s obvious that you’ve been taking great care of her. Look how shiny her coat has become.

Moyen / Klein Poodle Info:                                                                            Moyen is the French word for the fourth size of Poodle in France, but the remainder of Europe refers to them as Kleins.  Its size falls in between the Miniature and Standard Poodle, but it is not obtained by crossing the two; it is an actual fourth Poodle breed size in Europe and is not a new size. Kleins (Moyen) are very common in the U.S.
They are not recognized by the AKC, however they are recognized by the following organizations:
  • FCI = Fédération Cynologique Internationale
  • UKC = United Kennel Club
  • DRA = Dog Registry of America, Inc.
