Started this discussion. Last reply by Adrienne Jan 21, 2014. 41 Replies

OK, I am at my wits end.  Dougie is now 50+ lbs and will not jump into the back seat of my Honda Pilot.  He accidentally did it once so I know that it is possible, but, he will not even attempt to do…Continue

What Type of Doodle(s) do you have? What are their names? Tell us about your doodle(s) or any other pets you have!
I have a chocolate Australian Labradoodle named Dougie from Berkshire Hills Labradoodles in Haydenville, MA. He was born on 4/23/2013 and is a bundle of joy. My last dog, Max--a wonderful Weimaraner, lost his battle with a neurological disease on 10/19/12 at the age of 14.5 years. I miss him dearly.
Where did you get your doodle(s)?
Breeder
Why did you choose a doodle rather than another breed or mix?
Great temperament, beautiful, intelligent, great with kids and other dogs, playful, not usually aggressive, easily trainable, not typically shedders.
What are Your Favorite Things to Do With Your Doodles?
Go to the Dog Park, cuddle, play keep away or any other games that keep him active.
Does your doodle(s) shed?
Nope!
Who grooms your doodle(s)?
I was lucky enough to find a great groomer at "PetSmart", of all places. She just gives him a 1 inch, all-over body cut.
Favorite Doodle Products?
Snuggle Puppy, Bully Sticks, rope toy and "Hide-A-Squirrel" toy.
Relationship Status:
Married
Would you be willing to Dog Sit on occasion for other DoodleKisses members? (You are NOT committing to anything by saying yes - you are just saying you might be willing to do this if you were acquainted with the other member and the circumstances were right.)
Yes

Hi Adrienne,

Glad to hear you're settled in Delaware.  How are the kids and Dougie doing?  We missed you and Dougie at Alla's.  Hope you'll be back to visit -- or maybe we'll come visit you :)

Adrienne, I think it is too early to take Dougie to the groomer. PLEASE check with your vet before you take him to any groomer or let him walk around out in public. After your vet clears it to be safe for him, instead of PetsMart, I might check with the people in your local doodle group here on DK to see if they have any groomer recommendations. (OR you can just have your vet trim Dougie's nails)

Dougie is adorable, btw!! :-).

Didn't want to put all this in your discussion, but some tips for curbing the nipping:

Make sure that everyone in your home (and all visitors) know that they must never hold a toy (or anything else) out of the puppy's reach and encourage him to jump for it or grab it. Make sure that everyone knows that they must not let the puppy "wrestle" or pull anything out of their hand, period. (No tug of war games.) Also, the reverse is true. Nobody should pull or wrestle a toy out of the dog's mouth; if he wants you to throw it, he has to release it. (Obviously, if he has something dangerous, you have to take it away).

Also make sure that everyone knows that they are not to use their hands as "toys" for the dog to try to grab or bite. This is a common "game" that adult men like to play with puppies, for some reason.

If his teeth touch skin, the playing stops immediately. If he pulls at anyone's clothing with his teeth, the playing stops immediately. If he nips, the person nipped is to cry "Ow!" in a high pitched yelp, and then immediately stand, move away, and/or ignore him.

Hope this helps. :-)
