Standard F1 Aussiedoodle - Jake
Why did you choose a doodle rather than another breed or mix?
Our journey to Jake was long. It started when after graduating from college I couldn’t find a job so I started working in a pet store. I know, the majority of pet stores that sell puppies are evil and I had always refused to go in ones that did. However, this store kept the puppies together in a litter-like environment in big clean rooms with heated floors based on size, age, and temperament; the vet came weekly and they fed a good quality kibble. Although the puppies came from puppy mills, they were from ones that did keep up higher standards and not the horrible ones you hear stories about.
I worked at that store for 9 months before I landed a “real job,” and obviously became very picky about knowing what exactly I wanted in a puppy and what to look for. The whole time I was there, there was only ONE puppy that stole my heart and I wanted to take home but could not due to apartment size limits. He was a Chocolate F1B Labradoodle whom I named Reggie, who’s “breeder” was on the State Board of Agriculture and in charge of going around inspecting kennels making sure they were up to code. One day, Reggie was being sold as I came in for my shift. Needless to say I balled my eyes out and went to say goodbye… he went to the best possible family and they came to visit often, with the now renamed Coco.
After Reggie was gone, my favorite breed has always been Australian Shepherds, and I knew I really wanted to work with a breeder where I could go out and see the parents, kennels, etc. We found a great breeder for miniature Aussies and picked out a little guy at 2.5 weeks based on pictures (I had my heart set on a red merle male). At five weeks we visited and fell in love. I named him Reggie as well, because he had the exact same great temperament. At seven weeks the breeder did the Volhards temperament test and it came up exactly as I wanted and we prepared to take out little guy home. Then bad news... Reggie was sick and had to be rushed to the vet. He kept getting sick on and off for the next few weeks until he finally passed away at 11 weeks.
We decided to wait and continue working with our breeder and kept going back to meet new litters, but there was never another pup like Reggie. We waited some more and one day, almost a year later and a less than a month before I was moving to start grad school, I looked at the old pet store’s website for available puppies and saw Jake, the F1 Aussiedoodle. IMMEDIATELY I felt he was going to be the one and we went that very night to meet him. He was a red merle male, just like I wanted, but when I saw his chart he was also the half-brother (same father) of Reggie #1, with the exact same temperament as both the Reggies’. I was ecstatic but still very apprehensive due to the fact that he was a pet store puppy. I went back every day for 5 days straight, sometimes twice a day. During this time, all of his brothers and sisters were sold who had more spunky personalities and my “calm” little guy was left. On the last night I came to visit, another family was playing at him. They loved him but needed to sleep on it. Of course, five minutes after they left I was signing the papers. Seeing someone almost take him away and remembering how I felt after my first Reggie was sold, I knew right then and there that even though he wasn’t from a breeder, he was my dog and I’ve never looked back or regretted my decision.

Your doodle looks like over time it lost all the apricot "ish" corloring and ended up mostly black and grey.  My Sheba who is a golden doodle did the same thing.  She has some beautiful markings, kind of a brindle.  Anyway, loved looking at your pictures!

Hi Heather... KNOCK wood - and I'm knocking real hard -lol... Tori's on Nature's recipe canned - Homestyle Ground Chicken - easy to digest.  Probably NOT the "best" of foods, but it works and she likes it!  I also put  a spoonful of pumpkin mixed in at times too.  Glad to hear Jake is doing better!

Hi Heather!  How is Jake doing with his 'digestion issues'?  Funny how many aussidoodles have some digestion problems when they are young.

That's funny.. tori has a sensitive stomach too.  It took quite a while before we actually found a food she can tolerate.  Enjoy Jake!  He's a beauty!
