Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi everyone, and a special "Hi" to all Penny's fans who were dismayed at my announcement to discontinue the weekly blogs. So as I like to make people happy (to quote an American phrase: "I'm such a suck up"), I will continue as long as I can come up with enough subject matter to entertain you all...."Yay!" I hear you all cry...I hope so anyway!

Penny is a little over 4 months old now and we visited the vets on Tuesday for her last kennel cough shot, she weighed in at 32lbs, so from what I've read about the rule of thumb, at 4 months old, double the weight and add 5-10lbs and you should be in the ball park for her final weight, so that will be in the region 70-75lbs. Actually I don't care what size she finally reaches, but it is nice to speculate, and I have to admit that I am surprised, as her mom, a small Standard Poodle weighs in at 38lbs. From what I've read on this site though, that rule of thumb often goes straight out of the window, so we'll see.

Yesterday Penny and I attended our first puppy training class. Only two others turned up, which was better than the last time I tried 6 days previously when we were the only ones, maybe it's the economy? I turned up first, it was at PetSmart, so we chatted with the instructor for a while before we were directed to go and wait in the training area. So Penny and I dutifully went on our way and waited for the others. Jeri was going to come with me, but she's been so slammed with work recently and was still typing away when I left home. The next student to arrive was a young lady with a 6 month old Australian Shepherd, as she waited with me, her dog cried and yapped constantly. I let out some of Penny's leash so she could get closer to the noisy thing, but it wasn't interested in her, so I reeled her back in. I say reeled, but I don't use one of those silly flexi-leashes, just a six-foot nylon leash. Then the instructor came walking over and said "Is that Penny making all that noise?"....What a cheek! Just because she's really fussy when she meets strangers, she soon loses interest and calms down. Anyway both the Aussie's owner and I pointed at the Aussie, and I think the instructor was quite surprised...Hah!

Then the last of the students arrived, a teenage girl and her younger brother with a 7 month old Lab mix, mainly Lab though, and it was all over the place trying to get at everyone, and the girl had little control over the dog. So here's me with what is a notoriously high energy dog, younger and bigger than the other two, and she was the best behaved...Hah! again!

We didn't do much in that first class, just introduced to their methods, with a few demonstrations etc, but it was interesting and I'm looking forward to going further. The other thing that was funny was while the instructor was talking, the Aussie was still making a lot of noise, the Lab was still giving it's owner a hard time, and Penny just laid down, head sideways on the floor, ears all over the place, and her big fuzzy paw draped over my foot. The girl with the Lab said "Aaaah!" and the instructor looked down, laughed and said "Not a lot of stress going on is there?"...."Not so much!" was my reply. I'm really proud of her. Without trying, she showed everyone else up.....Muhahahaha!

You know, it's weird, I want to draw a portrait of Penny, and you'd think with all the photos I've taken so far, I'd have no problem finding the right pose, but I'm not finding the one that trips my trigger yet. Which is funny, because when I do them for other people, I just go from the photos I'm given...maybe I'm being too subjective, but I want it to be perfect...I'll keep trying!

Talking of photos, Penny has discovered a new way of asking to come in from the yard. She climbs on one of the patio chairs and stares through the window, see photos below:

I think that's it for this week folks, keep those comments coming in, it's what I live for...hee hee!

Good boy, someone taught you well! Yes, we do look first, but it's those middle-of-the-night trips that get us!

Re: toilet bowl again: I don't have to ask Jeri, you girls want us to lift the seat, so you don't have to sit on any warm puddles, and you want us to put the seat down again afterwards so you don't sit on the rim, and I can understand that, but it wouldn't hurt to look first would it? But then again from my experience, you're always in such a screaming hurry...hee hee. But I'm such a good boy I lift both up, and put both down when I'm done!

Oops, leaving the seat up, not open!

Re: toilet bowl - there's a big difference between leaving the lid open and leaving the seat open. Ask Jeri, I'm sure she can explain it!

Well of course Penny was the best, lol, doesn't suprise me in the least..., Just out of curiosity were the other two dogs around the same age as Penny?...And also you do some work with Penny, so maybe the others have had no training at all...I have a 12 yr old Aussie, he is not a barker, but my other Aussie, ( we lost him last year) was a terrible barker...He would bark at anything and everything...Aussies are either barkers or they aren't...But they are smart dogs, and mine is very good natured, and loves our little Oliver...I get so frustrated because he lets Ollie do whatever to him, and doesn't get the least bit upset with him...When Ollie was really small, he would latch on to the Aussies ear, and when the aussie walked there was Ollie dragging along, lol...Many was the time that I had to stop Ollie from mouthing the other one..It has gotten better, Ollie is almost 5 mos now and they really play very well together, but there are times I wish the aussie would just swat at Ollie, and put him in his place, lol...Looking forward to more stories from you and Penny.....Cheryl

Re: the toilet bowl....having lived with cats now for over 12 years has taught me to always put the toilet lid down after using, especially after my daughter's cat Mo fell in once...Doh! Every time we have guests in the house, oddly enough, especially women, I often find the lid left open, and they are the ones who always complain about men leaving the seat up....what's the difference?

Well, who can pass up a good hunk of corned beef?? Not me!! Our golden retriever Katie was a bread lover. She once ate an entire loaf of bread from the table, and didn't touch the roast beef! Go figure. Oh, and then there was the time my mom brought a dozen buns (donuts for all you that aren't from Baltimore!), the really good ones filled with custard, chocolate coated, etc. While we were all out in the pool, Katie helped herself to them...we couldn't find a single morsel! And then there was the time....LOL!
Now that Gus is tall enough, he's become very interested in the toilet bowl...uh oh!

Debbie. Comments like that make my blogging all worthwhile, thank you. Hope the chaos at your new home settles down soon. If I lived close, I'd help with the painting, which is one chore I enjoy!

I am so stressed tonight-moving into a reno we have been working on for a year next Thursday. I am packing my brains out all evening and working at the house painting, grouting, chasing the doodle as he runs off with my paint brush across the new hardwood, etc. My body hurts and my feet are killing me. Reading you blog made me relax. I don't need a good book tonight or even a movie-I have "Kevin Poole" to read. BTW- I think our GD who looks exactly like your Penny weighed about 36 lbs. at 4 mths. Now at 10 1/2 mths he is about 80 lbs. We think he has more growing to do though If your Penny has big paws as you mentioned- I'm going to guess 75 lbs for her which is a lovely size.
