Well, "the best laid plans of mice and men"  Judy has had surgery and we cut down the number of foster dogs in our home to make it a bit easier for me to care for the dogs and Judy while she is recuperating.  Suddenly this happened...

http://www.countynewscenter.com/video?v=155953

Our group rescued four of these dogs while other rescues took the other 17...  No strain for Judy and I, since we had fosters lined up to care for the 4 dogs we rescued.  Two of them are six week old puppies.  Healthy and very adoptable as soon as they get a  decent age for adoption...

Then there were two young females who were ratty and fearful.  These are my entry pictures.  I always take entry pictures to get a baseline of how the dogs looked when we got them.  They have been washed and trimmed a bit since the images were shot but still need some work before their "official portraits"

Anyway our vet determined that both girls have Giardia and we have the only home with enough room to isolate the two girls while they are treated for their condition.  BTW:  Home Depot sells a wonderful anti bacterial/anti virus cleaner called ODOMAX.  A gallon is fairly inexpensive and the darn stuff kills just about anything including the AIDS virus.

Now, we have also received a NINE and a HALF year old Maltese WHO IS PREGNANT . We are the ones with experience whelping puppies and we have the set up to do this (puppy pens and whelping boxes).  So we have another foster and soon to be several (Judy used her stethoscope and heard at least three puppy heart beats) puppies.  Judy is a retired RN who taught and practiced maternity nursing...  Lucky thing is that we have been told that the sire of the pups is a Maltese. No worry about pit bull-Maltese puppies popping out.

I just learned that we can expect another pregnant gal early next week.

Mom and the three pups are home now.  Two boys and a girl.  Mom is still in a bit of pain and is still a bit confused as to what happened to her.  She went to sleep and suddenly awakened with three little things sucking on her.

Quite often, at least with smaller dogs like Maltese, it takes several hours before they bond with a new litter of puppies that were delivered by C-section.  However, they usually bond immediately to puppies delivered by natural delivery.

All three pups are nice looking and seem very strong.  They are moving around and sucking. Mom's mil;k has come in.  Pictures will follow.

I always feel more relaxed after the pups are here and are doing well.  I hate the anticipation of waiting for the delivery.  Judy is an expert at the delivery process and I usually assist her. I have at least once, delivered an unexpectedly early litter of pups alone.  Usually a dogs temperature will drop and then she will begin digging at her bed (nesting) however the dog whose litter I delivered alone, did neither of these things.  One minute she was fine and the next minute her pups were popping out...

Keep us updated on these pups, and I hope Judy recovers quickly!

One pup was delivered dead however the vet tells us that three of the pups are doing fine. We were worried that the advanced age of the mom might present some complications. C-section was performed this morning.  I will pick up the family in about two hours.

Judy is feeling great.  We made a doctors visit today and he was all smiles because of the way she was healing.  He showed us pictures shot during the surgery and she has a stainless steel joint about the size of a marble between her foot and big toe.  She previously had surgery for the same type of arthritis condition in her other foot and that surgery was no where as successful (different doctors with different skill sets),  DO YOU REALIZE THAT HALF THE DOCTORS GRADUATED IN THE BOTTOM HALF OF THEIR CLASS (lol).

Any this is an entry picture of the pregnant nine and a half year old.  I don't usually worry about the quality of entry pictures. They are just to establish a baseline of how the dog looked when it arrived...

I brought her to the vet today.  She has four puppies in the oven and we are expecting to deliver them by C-section because of the mother's age and the size of the puppies.  Our vet is great and is on-call 24-7 for us...

You two are a godsend to so many dogs in distress.  Thank you.

Great news, Richard. Bert and Ernie will just go to homes as puppies like other puppies with 'no ill effects' of their previous situation and I'll bet you and bring those little girls around in short time.  That first little girl is just all ears and totally precious.
