27 weeks? That means that Penny is now six months and one week old! I always thought that six months was a milestone in a dog and owner’s relationship, but it came and went virtually unnoticed. For those of you who read my last post a couple of weeks ago, you may remember that I said Penny is so much calmer now and generally well behaved, almost as if she has grown up...BOY WAS I WRONG!

Apparently she was lulling me into a false sense of security since her spaying, which she took in her stride and came out the other side a seemingly different pooch, all sensible and just happy to watch the world go by...hee hee! Until she rediscovered the delight of biting off the branches from Jeri’s favorite plants in the yard, which we thought she’d got over a couple of months ago. She’s now attacking them with renewed vigor, the only difference to before is that she’s got smarter about it, we don’t see her helping herself anymore. All we see is the stripped down plant and the carnage on the lawn...along with that face of perfect innocence of course! She has also started stealing tissues and drier sheets out of the bedroom trash can, drier sheets really get her going, she loves ‘em! However to give Penny her due, she doesn’t run away when discovered and it’s easy to remove the offending object from her mouth. I suppose it’s better than her eating something nasty and smelly. Anyway, she daily seems to be finding new ways of getting into trouble, all things I’ve heard you guys talking about with your dogs, but when they were much younger, it seems she’s suddenly discovered the joy of being naughty. We can’t complain though, she hasn’t got up to anything serious, and I still believe that’s because we’re home with her all the time, and she doesn’t get bored because she’s alone.

Wednesdays are now regular doggy day care day. One of the rules at this day care is that dogs have to be delivered before 9.00am, now as I’ve mentioned before Penny is not a morning dog and the day care is a 27 mile drive. Penny is quite capable of staying in bed until 9.30 am and we obviously like to feed her before she goes. So yesterday we set the alarm for 6.00am, as Jeri and I both work from home, alarm clocks are a thing of the past for us as it doesn’t matter what time we get up in a morning as neither of us are on that tight of a schedule. The alarm goes off on time and I get out of bed, put the coffee on for Jeri and the kettle on for my tea. Penny’s still asleep. Jeri attempts to make a fuss of Penny to wake her up, Penny wakes up, gives Jeri a face bath and goes back to sleep. I take a shower, Penny is still asleep, I get dressed and force Penny to get up, she walks into the dining room, gets up on the pet’s sofa and goes back to sleep. I turn the TV on and Jeri and I watch the news for while. Then at 7.00am I make a concerted effort to get Penny on her feet and outside to go pee. She staggers outside and sits on the deck watching the chocolate lab across the street rolling on his back in his driveway, no attempt to go down the steps to go pee. Knowing she won’t eat anything until she’s had some exercise, I suit up to take her for walk in the pouring rain, one mile, two pees and two poops later, we’re back and Jeri prepares Penny’s breakfast. Penny sits adoringly at Jeri’s side while brekky is being prepared. Jeri puts the dish on the kitchen floor, Penny takes about 5 or 6 bites and goes and lays down. It’s now about 8.00am so we get ready to go and she slept during the trip in the car, It was still raining hard when I dropped her off at 8.45am. Don’t get me wrong, even though Penny is lazy, she does enjoy romping all day with the pack of about thirty other dogs, you can tell she’s excited when she gets there, just jump starting her is an enormous task. It stopped raining about 1.30 in the afternoon, so I was hoping Penny would be dry-ish when I picked her up. I had to go into Portland to see a client, and I picked the pup up on the way back at about 4pm, as I drove into the parking lot, I could see Penny laying down by the gate, I think she was waiting for me, this place has a buzzer set up to warn them of vehicles entering their parking lot, so by the time I’d stopped the car, the whole pack was there waiting for me. I parked about 20 feet away from the gate, and when I got out of the car, I opened the back door so Penny could just get in when she desired. Brenda the owner appeared, and after making her way through the pack, opened the gate to let Penny out, she looked totally exhausted, Penny that is, not Brenda, and she was a dark shade of gray, she had dried out but she was filthy. As she came through he gate, she made her way to the car, Brenda and I started chatting about the weather, it was now dry and sunny, Penny looked back at me as she stood by the car, I said “Get in then” and she did, jumped up on the back seat and sat down and waited. But then Brenda and I got into a conversation about football, and after a little while I felt a tapping on the back of my leg. Penny had got back out of the car and was nosing me as if to say “Come on the, I’m shattered, I need to go home!”...So we did, she entered the house, polished off what was left of her breakfast and went to sleep for about 3 hours. When she woke up, she was so crusty we decided to give her a bath, so all in all Wednesdays are a bit of a trial for the poor girl, enjoyable, but hard work.

The first photo below was just prior to her bath yesterday (you can see how grubby she is), never too tired to beg for people food though, along with Bunny, I do think those two are going to be really good friends before too long now.

The next photo was taken this lunchtime during one of our walks.

And this final photo was taken last Saturday afternoon as I was settling in to watch the NASCAR race, puppy by my side, Bunny asleep between my legs, and Potsy deciding she needed a cuddle. Pet magnet? Me?

That's it for this post. Until next time folks!

Once again, a great blog! Sounds like Penny has reached her teenage years, a piece of cake compared to those human kids. Maybe that's why she enjoys sleeping in. Kevin, I love your "lunchtime" photo - gorgeous woods!

Yes Denise she is tall, not weighed her recently, but judging by the last time we did when she was 42lbs, I'd say between 45 and 50lbs. Thanks Kendra for giving me hope.

Allyson: I couldn't cope with barking, Penny lets us know when she wants to come out of her crate by yawning...REALLY LOUD! And sometimes if Jeri goes to the bathroom in the early hours, it can be then, so Jeri lets her out and she gets up on the bed with us, greets us both with a good licking, then goes back to sleep.

I only wish Peri could sleep like Penny! 6am is her wakeup for us. We should never set an alarm - she is like clockwork! Starts barking to be with us!

This post makes me smile Kevin. Remington was the most well behaved puppy... but come 7 months all hell broke loose... but it only lasted for a month or so!

Love your pictures, Penny is so tall already for 6 months...how much does she weigh? I have one of each...Hannah is the couch potato and will sleep when ever, where ever. Honey is the alarm clock, it's wake up and get me out time, you do what you have to do after you take me out. Which is fine, at least it's not happening in the apartment anymore, she is finally getting the potty training down. After they both have gone out, than they get their breakfast and do their little playtime romp around the apartment, than its at Mom's feet sleeping or they either go on the bed or in their crates (because they want to)! At least Penny does not shred up the tissue, or drier sheets like Honey would, even though that is starting to slow down with her some. But all in all I must say over the last two to three weeks Honey has just improved so much.

Well, I see Penny has learned not to rest under the foot of the recliner at least some of the time. The picture in the woods is lovely--you both look great.

Last night I was going through posts from the past 2 weeks thinking I missed your last one. Boy am I glad I didn't. I really do enjoy them.
I feel your pain. Samantha is the same way - if I stay in bed late, she wont move a muscle. She could wait until 10a to go P&P. Before Charli, I could go downstairs, have a pot of coffee, watch the entire Today Show, go up shower and get dressed before Samantha would even begin to open her eyes. Now - whatever time I get up Charli does too. There is no way Charli is going to get more attention than Samantha so she pushes herself to get up and go downstairs. If Charli eats breakfast, Samantha wants breakfast. After a quick pee Samantha goes back to bed. Charli waits a little while longer and then meanders back up to my bed also. I love coming upstairs and seeing them both snuggled in my bed.
It's great on a morning we have to go nowhere but on the days I have to go to work (they go with me) I have to stop at the dogpark so Samantha will P&P. Yeah, I know - pityparty for me, huh??
