I recently saw a piece on DK where the writer was explaining the Yiddish word KVELL. So, without being too redundant..I will translate the word as meaning: to Gush with enormous pride over someone close to you & their accomplishments. Just like a picture one word can say a lot....so, I want o KVELL a little about DerbyDoodle.
in the short span of 7 days she left her hometown roots in Fla. for the unseasonably cold weather in Chicago....to only leave there after 6 days to fly to NYC. Once there we asked her to adjust yet again to new & unfamiliar surroundings for her young age of 4.5 mo.
We left for Ohare airport at the ungodly hr. of 4:30 a.m. If she had been a little older she may have recognized this as an unusual occurrence, but she had few travel experiences at this point to make that connection. But I am getting ahead of myself.
She had flown back to Chicago 6 days before under a more normal travel schedule. She was a good traveler that day. The 2.5 hr. flight was easy and she was a quiet puppy with her kong filled with peanutbutter & some dehydrated chicken treats. We almost forgot we were traveling with a pup.
Now, fast forward to May 23....we arrive at Ohare @ 5:15 a.m.
Never thinking about whether we should check if the flight is on time...Chicago had been experiencing bad weather & fog the evening before.
Well of course there were issues based on the still unstable weather...we never ever thought about delays let alone a 2 hr one.
This young, immature Doodle managed the boring time in a airport terminal like champ. If I had not been there i never would believe it.
How incredibly calm & serene she seemed.
She handled the trip in amazing fashion! Again, we never heard a peep out of her during the flight.
Remember,we were headed to NYC where nothing is ever a short ride by car. So from 4:30 a.m. To 2:30 e.s.t. We arrive. Now we have an hrs ride to Park Slope, Brooklyn b/c the normal 30 min jaunt is complicated by rain & traffic. All this time The Dood has not been able to go potty...Chicago has grassy areas outside of their terminals....however, JFK has none...and the only time DerbyDoodle showed any defiance was when asked to relieve herself on cold, hard concrete. Okay, okay I get it DerbyDoodle if you can wait...I can too?
We arrive at our condo...I look for some place that seems reasonable for her to go potty....as luck would have it.. NO grass to be found , but across from our place they had planted 6 new trees with a 3 sided fence & bark around the plantings. Eureka!! "A tree grows in Brooklyn".
She wasn't over the moon about her choice but she adjusted and made a wise decision to get familiar with these trees.
Four days into her visit now it's pretty amazing how she leads me to the trees and directs me to the open side of the fencing. This is after being scared by ambulances whizzing by & a multitude of dogs 10 times her 7 lb. size, that I am afraid to allow her to even consider saying hello to.
Oh, and I forgot how she is still uncomfortable in an elevator!
It's the only time I have seen her lay down without a command given to her.
So, you get the picture...pretty strange surroundings / unfamiliar schedule & I haven't even addressed my 3 grandchildren who can add chaos anywhere, any time...ages 7, 5, & 17 mo.
I think you will all agree an awful lot for a 4.5 m.o. to overcome.
(I did order another crate for ny just like she had in Fla & Chicago.
That helped her feel more secure, I am sure, to some small degree.)
So, why am I "kvelling"? This pup has managed to go thru all of this and 2 time changes in 7 days with no altering of her behavior or attitude. She is as far as I am concerned REMARKABLE ! So,I am enormously proud of this cute, adorable & very solid doodle pup...I have good reason to KVELL, I think!!....and gee in 48 hrs she gets to do this all over again, but by now I think she's a seasoned traveler...I guess there might be a epilogue to this story yet.
