I just typed this out once, and it didn't save. So...here we go again.
At the risk of jinxing things, the last couple of days walking Toby has been a joy. He has been doing "with me", "let's go", "get in", sitting at street corners with little encouragement, and even "look at me". Also, when we encountered someone who wanted to pet him yesterday, he sat patiently and accepted the attention. I have had comments by a couple of different people stating what a well behaved dog I have. I have told these people that it is a work in progress, and that next time they see us it may be a different story! Could it be that just perseverence and patience are starting to pay off? Toby is now 8 months old, and weighed in yesterday at 61.3 pounds, so I'm glad that things seem to be working out. :)
On another note, last time we were at the dog park there was a dog, bigger than Toby, that was just over one year old. This dog was quite a bit more boisterous, and would not leave Toby alone. It was leaping on him, mouth open (not to bite, but still inappropriate), and just being a terrible pest. The owner just said to let him know when Toby had had enough. Ummmm.....since at the time Toby was laying between my husband's legs on the ground, I'd say that should be your first clue. That is the only negative experience we've had there, and I hope not to encounter this dog and owner again.
Because of these successes at home, I shall ignore any negative comments and criticism I get at Obedience school this Friday, and know that we ARE learning, and Toby CAN do these thing. He was even doing off leash comes very well at the dog park. Mind you, I had leftover steak pieces in my pocket, but still...... :)
