It is completely foreign to my sweet little Callie that another dog might NOT want to play with her! At my sister's last weekend, she kept trying to play with their 14 year old lhasa/shi-tzu mix, Scoobie. Scoobie has been a cranky curmudgeon since she was a puppy, and this has not improved with age. Callie would run up to Scoobs, bump her with her nose, and then jump back. Scoobie's invariable response was to turn around barking, growling, and snapping. Since Scoobie doesn't have two teeth that meet (and weighs in at a mighty 11 lbs) the danger is minimal...her greatest weapon is her very stinky breath. Callie was not dissuaded by the barking, growling, nipping, or breath. She thought Scoobie was playing a game with her, and when Scoobie would turn around and bark, Callie would bark too, and then start the process over again. We were iced into the house/yard. This went on for days!

Fast forward to now...I'm keeping a friend's dog for a few days (my friend just had a baby and the dog, Scout, keeps trying to bite the baby's head. Not so good). Callie is trying to play the SAME GAME with Scout...who is a cranky 11 year old lab mix...with teeth! Fortunately, Scout really is a sweet little girl (especially considering how rough her early life was...she was found living in a dumpster behind a Wendy's) and you just have to say her name to get her to back off. And bless her, Callie is still trying to play with her!

Max thinks every dog should be played with and when Mr.Chip our friend's anti-social dog comes over he wants nothing to do with Max...he growls at him and snaps at him...Max just kind of looks at him like he's saying "How can you not want to play with me!?!" Too funny!

Timbow is the same way! My mom and dad have a 9 year old shih tzu (Timbow's uncle Mushu) and he hates Timbow!! Timbow bites at his neck and feet and mushu growls the whole time. Of course this makes Timbow think that he wants to play more and it goes on and on! They really are in their own little world sometimes. :)

Oh, this does not sound like fun for you or for Callie. We have an old, cranky Yorkie next door who Guinness is always trying to play with. Guinness starts with the nose bump and then tries to jump on Oscar to play. Oscar wants nothing to do with it. He growls, snaps, and then falls to the ground pretending to be injured. At that point Guinness looks confused and moves on to something more fun like chasing the birds. My neighbor is always asking if we can get the dogs together, but for obvious reasons I do my best to avoid it. When I get old and cranky I know I don't want anyone bumping my nose or worse yet jumping on me.

Diane - I wish Callie could play with Ringo too! (Callie wishes it too...if she could talk she'd say "could I have a playmate under the age 10 and over the age of 3 months?"

Awww....wish Callie could come to my house. Ringo would LOVE to play like that with her!

Callie actually does the nose bump/jump back to frogs we happen upon outside too (you know, before she tries to eat them). It's really cute.

Oh nose bumps... what is it about those :) When Remington gets irritated with me for not paying attention to him I get bumped in the butt! Too funny!

Haha! She's trying her best to bring life back into those senior dogs: "Play with me and I swear you'll like it! PLEEEEASE!" Rosco does the nose bump and hop back too =)
