Day 2.  We're both exhausted and one of us is soaking wet.  Silly rain.  If she just went potty when we took her out, she wouldn't have to go out in the rain again and again.  She's finally warming up to "daddy," and finds his fingers to be tastier than anything else, other than my toes.  Won't, ahem, go all the way to the bathroom today; just this morning after midnight.  We tried leaving her alone for a whole hour and opened the door to crying...her, not me.  I think she's the most adorable puppy ever!

Allison, I feel your pain...I'm in PA and it's been pouring since yesterday! We picked up Mila on Wednesday! Love his little face...my baby is a parti doodle too.

Yes, she is adorable - that darling brown and white face! What's her name? I assume you, the human, are Allison. Correct? My Dudley, bless his heart, for all the "stuff" he has put us through in his 6 very mischievous years, was a dream to potty train. I was totally determined he would know from day one that the place to go potty was in his yard. This after having had two female dogs (not doodles) who marked in the house. Mayb it is because he's a male, I don't know. But he "got" it and he got it good and he got it forever. There was one esception. About 3 years ago we agreed to care for a shitsapoo puppy for 10 days because her owner had to go into emergency surgery for a life threatening condition. We were assured that the puppy was 90% house broken. NOT! She was very methodical in how she positioned her turds on our dining room floor. Dudley didn't mess with the turds. He just lifted his leg over the puppy and let the showers fly. We knew then and there that Dudley was not especially interested in a companion dog. So he is and will be an only. Good luck! This too shall pass....

Allison - Rooney's breeder gave me same great tips that she uses when training puppies.  Have a potty command - ours is "get busy".  Have treats in hand - give the command 1 time and wait.  When she goes - #1 or #2 then you throw yourself into a praise party and give a treat.  Make it a BIG deal.  She will get the idea quick!  Enjoy these puppy days - they go so fast.

I have always said that you should only get a puppy in the summer time so you can housetrain in decent weather.  Then what did I do? I went and got a puppy in FEBRUARY in the Pacific Northwest.  I broke my own rule and could only laugh at myself when I was standing in the rain and mud waiting for Rooney to "go potty".

Hopefully sunny days are coming and that will make everything easier.  The first 3-4 weeks are the hardest and then it really starts to smooth out (or at least it did for us).  Hang in there and enjoy her cuteness!

I agree you, Allison! She is the most adorable puppy ever! The first few days (ok, weeks!) are very trying and you will be absolutely exhausted! We have all "been there, done that" and now it's just a distant memory, lol! Be sure to join the "Puppy Madness" group for some great advice! Most likely, you will find someone that is experiencing the exact same things you are -- and at the same time! Good luck!
