DH found a little dog outside last night as he was leaving to go to a friends house. of course, he calls me to catch it. The dog had a collar but no tags, but I recognized him
His name is Buttons, perhaps a yorkie mix. Hes almost a year old, and belongs to a somewhat crazy woman on the 3rd floor. She always acts as if Cooper will eat her Buttons, although Buttons loves Cooper and Cooper is totally overwhelmed by him jumping up at her and is very submissive to him (imagine, 3lbs vs 60lbs)
We think poor little Buttons fell off the balcony and broke his leg. His front paw was crooked. Maybe internal injuries too as hes only a few lbs. A neighbour told us his owner is away for a few days (her adult son is ill with kidney issues and got transferred to a hospital further away) and he was being looked after by another somewhat crazy man in the building. The superintendents of the building confirmed this. The woman (Ivy) does not have a phone. The man (Robert) was not home.
We had a discussion about what to do. DH and I, the superintendants, and the neighbour all agreed the best thing was to call the humane society. Non of us could keep him for a few days til his owner came home, we all have pets of our own and the poor little guy was in shock and in pain.
So I called the humane society. It was after hours but they have an emergency number. They came and picked him up and took him to the vet to get him stabilized. Hopefully that means pain meds. They cannot authorize any medical assistance for him without the owners permission. I wish we could have said he was a stray but we need to cover our butts. The superintendents said that Ivy and her husband do have money, so if he makes it til they get back, hopefully they will pay to get his leg fixed.
UPDATE
DHs aunt was at her vet yesterday with her kitty and overheard a conversation between a dog owner and the receptionist. it was Buttons owner. he had broken several toes. his owner was asking why it cost so much (around $500). I actually think thats pretty cheap - i know broken bones can cost over $7000 if surgery is needed. Thankfully he got medical treatment and is home with his owner (the latter may not be so great). From what i heard the man looking after buttons had him on the balcony as buttons was pottying in the house. Im thinking maybe his big dog scared buttons. though buttons is always on the balcony when his owners are home.
At least he got treatment poor little thing, though he probably had to wait a good 36 hours til his owner came home.
thanks Jennifer for your generous offer. I think they gave him pain meds til his owner showed up
I havent seen him yet but will post when i do
2ND UPDATE
Just took Cooper out for a pee and the building superintendent is talking to Buttons mom. She tells her DH and I were the ones who found him. poor little guy has a green cast up to his armpit. Ivy (his mom) says that the vet says the break is consistent with him being stepped on or kicked, and not from a fall. She says she has pet insurance (I dont know who with) who want to know exactly what happened and arent wanting to pay out (i guess if the person looking after him did something then its not considered an accident). He has admitted he went out leaving Buttons on the balcony. I said DH and I would be happy to provide any information (phone call, letter) they need. Buttons little tail started wagging when he saw Cooper!

Poor little dog, I hope he will receive better care in the future.
I am thrilled that Button's Mom is having him taken care of properly. I am not sure that this particular home is the best place for him but at least she didn't dump him at a shelter.
I am so glad that Buttons seems to be recovering. My take on most pet insurances is that they weasel out of paying if they possibly can. While you can help, the lady needs the vet to write up his notes in such a way that her insurance WILL pay.
Glad to hear that Buttons got treatment. You know a roll of garden fencing is cheap and can be zip tied to the posts in a balcony making it safe for little ones - dogs and kids. We did this on the landing of our house until our granddaughter gets older.
Glad to hear Buttons was taken to the vet and $500 is not much for several broken toes. Camus had one broken toe, vet bills were $707.50 and his vet is reasonable compared to others in my area.
Did the man that was supposed to be watching him while the owner was away ever realize he was missing and look for him?
Ditto what F. Said. Good grief.
I'm glad Buttons got treated and I think I'm glad he is home.

Poor Little Guy....where was the guy who was supposed to be caring for him, he should have the owners number at the very least right? And really, why was the dog on a balcony that he could fall from...this is totally nuts.
Good thing your DH saw him or who knows what might have happened. Thank goodness you took that steps to care for him. Pooh on the owner for not being sure he was in good hands.
(I can't imagine leaving Daisy let alone with someone that clearly did not have it all together- ugh)
