Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
This week has been a tough week. My DH has been gone most of the week and with Vern getting up a lot at night, I was not getting enough sleep. I have posted before about Vern being a bit of a night owl and got some great feedback and suggestions. The one I liked best was from a member that said they let there dog roam at night. If that didn't work with Vern, we were going back to crating every night. Right now, they sleep in our bedroom with our door closed. Out of sheer frustration the other night, I took Vern out around 2:30 am and brought Fudge back to bed and just left Vern do as he pleased. Well, here is what happened.
Good thing #1: He was perfect. In the morning, I could see he had been busy emptying his toy box of bones, balls, ropes, etc., but nothing else had been disturbed or chewed. No pacing, no barking, no disturbing us. etc. Perfect. Plus, this morning, I got up and Vern was sleeping in his crate in the foyer. In other words, he had crated himself :) I do feel it is much cooler out there and that was part of the problem in our bedroom.
Good thing #2: Yesterday morning, I woke up to find our basement flooded due to a leak in our toilet tank. What a mess. I spent almost all morning cleaning and mopping and doing laundry. We keep a plastic lid (yes, that is correct) at the top of the steps to prevent the dogs from coming down into the basement. I was so busy working that I did not check on the dogs once (bad doodle mommy). I had no idea what to expect when I came upstairs. Well, Fudge had been waiting at the top of the stairs for me to reappear. She worries about me when she knows something is wrong. Vern was sound asleep in the foyer on my antique sofa, otherwise known as, Vern's expensive dog bed. Nothing had been disturbed.
Good thing #3: All week, we have stopped crating the dogs when we leave. Again, great suggestions by other members on the best way to do this. Yesterday, we were gone three hours and no problems. I hope like Shelly said, me writing this down does not jinx this. Again, perfect.
So, today I think I have the best dogs in the world. Monday, I wanted to ship them to any DK member that wanted them :) As I write this, I am looking out the window at a brand new HUGE hole Vern just dug this morning. Oh well, I am closing the shade and refusing to look. I like ending my week on a positive note.

Maybe Vern and Raleigh should start a landscaping business together! We have several new small holes all over the back yard, courtesy of Rals.
BTW, happy one year anniversary of adding Vern to your family! Tomorrow is Raleigh's 1 year! Hard to believe...
It sounds like you had a pretty good week - ignoring the basement problem. The golden boys roam where they please at night and know to get me if they need out...hmmm, why me instead of DH? (In all fairness, he's tried to take a turn occasionally but they wait for mom for some reason.) Maybe Vern is thinking the Easter Bunny is like Santa and he needs to be good to get lots of presents!
Well Laurie you certainly "discovered" lots of positives this week...I on the other hand (and I fear it's because I gloated when I read you post last Monday) have realized that Daisy too is subject to insomnia. Tuesday night at around 1AM she nudged my hand....I though uh oh, she must have to go potty, got up dressed in suitable outdoor clothing (pants), she didn't seem anxious to go out but she did and she piddled a little...hm, she must have just thought since I am up and out I might as well. We came back in, I went to my bed and she to hers. Wed. more like 3AM same thing, wow that's weird I thought but can't take the chance so again out we went and piddle she did. At this point I thought to myself, she is training me. Thursday same timeish the nudge from the nose again. This time I did not get dressed but did go out to the living room to see what might be bothering her and decided the blue glow of the new phone, making a huge circle of light on the ceiling perhaps. I put the phone face down on the chair looked over and there she was back in her bed all curled up. Okay if this happens again I am just going to say nite nite daisy, kiss her nose and rub her head and forget it. Last night I was on yappy hour till ten, had two beers and then climbed into bed with DH, Daisy was passed out in her bed. Well the two beers cause ME to get up in the middle of the night, while doing my thing in walked Daisy...I hugged her, kissed her said nite nite and went back to bed, and so did she.
What the doodle! I must reiterate - Daisy has not once since the first night with us has gotten up in the middle of the night and woke us up, not even once. I really jinxed me didn't I.
Thanks, Jennifer. Last night he slept in our room (door shut) until 8 am. He is making a liar of me :)
Jane, Stay tuned...it could turn on a dime and you could get your wish....LOL
