Emergency Vet Visit after Eating Latex Gloves!!

My poor DH had to rush Hartley to the vet today while I was at work.  We had some contractors removing old, bat poop infested insulation from our attic.  They were wearing gloves and when they were done just took them off and dropped them on the ground.  Hartley gave in to his Lab. genes and thought they looked pretty tasty.  My DH caught him as he was swallowing one whole, called the vet and rushed him there.  The vet gave him tasty canned food to eat to ensure his stomach was full and then injected him with a morphine derivative to make him throw up.  My DH said it was very distressing as he felt they had had to trick Hartley by offering him this tasty food and them making him sick.  The drug also completely knocked him out so that by the time he was finishing vomiting he was almost unconscious.  It turned out that he had eaten FOUR of these gloves, so it was a good job we did take him to the vet when we did.  I dread to think about what would have happened if they had made it past his stomach into the rest of his digestive system.  DH had to carry him out to the car - not easy with a 75lb dog that is completely limp!!  Hartley is still a bit groggy, but did eat his dinner and I'm sure he will be back to his normal goofy self tomorrow - but what a scare.  These doods are taking years off my life!!

I'm glad Hartley is okay! I agree the contractors were slobs and at the very least, I would make a very strongly worded complaint.

Just wondering, but are you planning on giving the contractors your vet bill?

Wow! So scary. Glad that the quick thinking got Hartley to the vet and the gloves "expelled" before they got stuck anywhere. I'm really lucky that Duncan doesn't have interest to eat anything that isn't food. (well except the occasional grass nibble or wood chip. He was playing with an empty water bottle and chewed off the cap and the little plastic ring and just spit them to the side. (I of course was supervising). He'll "re-locate" my socks but never try to eat them.

I'm so glad that Hartley is ok!!  I would send the vet bill directly to the contractors!  How could they do that??

I'm glad he's OK.  It's a good thing your husband caught him in the act.

And, thinking of contractors, we had our house painted last year and when the contractors were done

we found over a dozen razor blades scattered around the yard!  It's a miracle the dogs didn't have their

paws cut up, never mind the humans, like myself, who like to run around barefoot on occassion!

Good one!  Our Sgt. Pepper has taken a liking to eating rubber balloons!  We did not know this until

I was cleaning the yard and discovered a red balloon in a pile of poo!  Gads!  I was in a state of shock!

My grandchildren were instructed that there are no more balloons permitted in our home and I felt like

Cruella DeVille when I told them that, but puppy's health is just slightly more important!

A week later I discovered another partially eaten balloon, similar situation, and was not a happy camper.

Have to watch everything with an eagle eye now, never thought about rubber gloves, thanks for the heads up on that!  I use them frequently.

I honestly don't know which upset me more, the pincushion Mitzi half ate or the balloons Pepper loves!

I would be having a little word with the contractors.  That is totally unprofessional of them to leave a mess at their worksite.  Glad that everything came up OK for Hartley.  Give him loves from Rua.
