Emergency Vet Visit after Eating Latex Gloves!!

My poor DH had to rush Hartley to the vet today while I was at work.  We had some contractors removing old, bat poop infested insulation from our attic.  They were wearing gloves and when they were done just took them off and dropped them on the ground.  Hartley gave in to his Lab. genes and thought they looked pretty tasty.  My DH caught him as he was swallowing one whole, called the vet and rushed him there.  The vet gave him tasty canned food to eat to ensure his stomach was full and then injected him with a morphine derivative to make him throw up.  My DH said it was very distressing as he felt they had had to trick Hartley by offering him this tasty food and them making him sick.  The drug also completely knocked him out so that by the time he was finishing vomiting he was almost unconscious.  It turned out that he had eaten FOUR of these gloves, so it was a good job we did take him to the vet when we did.  I dread to think about what would have happened if they had made it past his stomach into the rest of his digestive system.  DH had to carry him out to the car - not easy with a 75lb dog that is completely limp!!  Hartley is still a bit groggy, but did eat his dinner and I'm sure he will be back to his normal goofy self tomorrow - but what a scare.  These doods are taking years off my life!!

He is still a bit subdued this morning, and probably hungry!!  But, I am so relieved that DH caught him in the act and we were able to get him treated before it got too serious.  Hartley has always loved going to see the vet, so I am hoping that this unpleasant experience doesn't put him off going there.  i think we will have to pop in just for  a social visit in a few days time, so he can have a good experience there again!

I continue to listen and learn - thanks for sharing this story.  So glad that Hartley is all better.

so glad to hear he is going to be ok.  I really dont understand what is with some contractors that they are so messy.  We bought a new home in FL and the first time we went to clean the air handler, when we opened it up there were several McDonalds cups in the duct work.  Every day I would walk the lot next door and pick up trash that they tossed on the ground right by the dumpster ...they were just pigs.  My Dad was a builder and the last thing the crew did in the evening before leaving was clean up so that each day started with a clean work site.  He helped us build a house once and every evening I had to sweep all the saw dust up and straighten up for the next day.  I agree that the contractor has some liability here or at a minimum should learn a valuable lesson for going forward.  I had a problem with Sophie and latex gloves when we first started going to the hospitals. The medical staff takes them off and tosses them towards the trash but don't always make it.  She is very curious and always wanted to check them out.

Thank goodness for your observant DH!  The experience could have been much more painful for Hartley if he's had to have surgery.

I agree with Kaytlin the contractors should pay the bill.  Glad to hear Hartley is okay.
