First the good news - at Stuart's vet check today the little moose (maybe that should be his name) gained almost 3 pds. since Friday!!!!  He weighed 10.5 pds!  In the two weeks since he was taken from the mill he has doubled his weight.

5/31  - 4.75 lbs - Rescue Date

6/7    - 6.9 lbs - Stuarts Gotcha Date

6/10  - 7.6 lbs

6/15  - 10.5 lbs  Great news that he is growing like a weed.

Now for poop issues.

Test #1 - direct smear - good news that they didn't see anything

Test #2 - float - they saw something "suspicious"  possible giardia cyst but could something of the same shape (circular) that was injested from a stick or leaf - so this is inconclusive

Test #3 - snap - came back negative

So they Knew that the Coccidia is gone and they Think the giardia is also but they can't be 100%.  So - they are going to extend the time period of Stuart taking the Metronidazole and due to Karen's advise - I asked about the Panacur.  Stuart & Rooney (just as a pre-caution) are both on a 5 day Panacur treatment.  It is a white liquid and must taste bad and both of them really fought me as I used a dropper.

We will continue to pick up the poop till we get 100% clean - They'll test again in 3 weeks.  We will continue to limit expose between the boys till the Panacur is done - another 5 days.

Are we being TOO cautious?

I am so glad that Stuart is doing so well. I don't know if you are being too cautious. What does the vet think about keeping them separated since Rooney is also taking the meds?

I don't know but in another week Stuart is going to weigh more then Jack!! Thank God for good mommies that love their babies un-conditionally. I don't know if you are being to cautious, look who would be answering??? HA

I would do the same but things sounds so much better. Even if Rooney is treated I wouldn't take the chance. Good luck! Welcome home Stuart!

Since Rooney and Stuart are both being treated, and you are picking up the waste, I don't understand why it is necessary to keep them separated.  Obviously, it can't hurt, but it sounds like a lot of work.

Good to hear that there is some positive improvement. Looking forward to the five day mark that the boys can get together. You are doing an awesome job!

I don't think you can ever be too cautious.  You are such a good doodle mommy!  Stuart and Rooney are so lucky!

You are doing a GREAT job with Stuart and both of you are starting to reap all the rewards.   What a lucky pup to have you for his mom.

Absolutely you are NOT being too cautious. Daisy came to us with hook worm and had been de-wormed twice at the breeder, it took 3 rounds of Panacur and the third round was 2 x as strong as the first two. We had a poop spot and had to clean it with hot water to wash away any remnants (I wish I had thought of the paper plate). I was told the pups at the breeder probably just keep reinfecting themselves cause it's in the grounds now. I of course told the breeder and she said OH NO, I have disinfected the grounds....whatever.

Cost for this repeat performance at the vet -$112 x 3....it was by my suggestion that she up the dose since she was 16lbs heavier than the first time. She missed puppy kindergarten because of it by 3 weeks.

Better safe than sorry!

Not too cautious at all.  I think I'll buy stock in Chinette, or do you use Dixie paper plates for catching Stuart's poop??
