I think I am becoming an overly defensive mom...

I had a kind of bad experience at the vet today. We took Darwin in for a routine check up, and the Vet Tech said something that made me so mad!

He was very excited to meet someone new. So, when she bent down to check his ears, his entire bum was wagging and wiggling, so he wasn't being very still. He was being very social and happy though, and I was proud that he didn't jump or struggle at all. When she went to take his temperature, she said

"You better hold him, he seems really whiny and nervous. But that is just the way the breed is, so it's normal."

Wha?? Our doodles are known for being happy and gentle you crazy woman! She continued to make underhanded insults about the breed and how "nervous" and "excitable" they all were.

Apparently the vet came in and checked him over... and he certainly didn't agree with his vet tech. He complimented me on how good and patient Darwin was. I guess it just made me upset that she told me Darwin was whiny and finicky, just because he was happy to meet someone new. I wonder if it was a preconception about "designer dogs" that she has? He didn't jump or struggle or anything, he was just wagging his tail... sheesh!

Have you ever felt overly sensitive about your doodles? Anyone else get overly annoyed when people make unfounded accusations about the doodle breeds?

The vet techs where we go are so sweet to Gavin. He is always happy to go there. Each time they say something like "look how handsome you are" or "you need a good petting don't you?" I turn over the leash to them and he follows them without a single glance back. It makes a huge difference in mine and his comfort levels. Never thought about it much till now. I would for sure be irritated if I were you, but would probably let it slide UNLESS it happens again.

I would have complained about her bad attitude to the vet. If she can't tell a whine from a wag how will she ever work out in a medical decision??

That vet tech is a moron. if you aren't super attached to your vet, I'd change. If you are close to your vet, I'd say something. All vets are businesses and are selling essentially the same service. The place where they can differentiate themselves is their people, caring, and service/ Your vet will want to know if he/she has an off-putting employee.

(btw - I had a friend over Saturday night who told me that Callie smells like butt. I was hurt and have given him a hard time about it non-stop. He also wouldn't Wilbur give him a hug and I called him an "unfeeling a-hole", so yep, I know how you feel!)

Maybe she was just upset that Darwin wanted to make it a challenge for her to hit a moving target when she was going to take his temperature ; -)

I would have been irritated also, but I probably would have said something to her I usually don't hold back very well. We were at a soccer game once with Hunter and there was another mother there with a standard poodle that was very poorly behaved (barked nonstop, jumped at everyone that walked by, and pulled like a sled dog on its leash). As we were leaving we were walking near them and Hunter was being an ANGEL on the leash, my 10-year-old daughter Ava said to the woman "Our dog is 1/2 poodle like your dog" and the woman said to her "that makes her a mutt" - my daughter without batting an eye said "looks like our mutt is better behaved than your poodle" - Go Ava! Wonder who she gets it from??? hhhmmmm

IMO they shouldn't say that about any breed - blanket statements like that are ignorant no matter what. The fact that it is the complete opposite characteristic of a doodle shows that.

They have been our vet since we got Darwin, which was nine months ago. But we have only taken him there three times.

Have they been your Vet for a long time? I would write a letter about it. I am like @Dan,Judi,Timbow.I would of have looked at her and asked if she was this rude to everyone. Then when the Vet came in I would have told them about it as well. Where I used to buy my dog food they always give me side ways looks with Jordan. I now buy my food from another place and they love her!

How dare she! I like the idea of a quick come back to make her think. Make sure you don't get her again.

I am always overly sensitive about Timbow. I either would have complained to someone about the vet tech, asked his/her name so I could make sure they never were in the room with us again, or made a smart comment like, "are you always this rude to your patients?". Vet visits are expensive and you don't need to put up with that!
