I think I am becoming an overly defensive mom...

I had a kind of bad experience at the vet today. We took Darwin in for a routine check up, and the Vet Tech said something that made me so mad!

He was very excited to meet someone new. So, when she bent down to check his ears, his entire bum was wagging and wiggling, so he wasn't being very still. He was being very social and happy though, and I was proud that he didn't jump or struggle at all. When she went to take his temperature, she said

"You better hold him, he seems really whiny and nervous. But that is just the way the breed is, so it's normal."

Wha?? Our doodles are known for being happy and gentle you crazy woman! She continued to make underhanded insults about the breed and how "nervous" and "excitable" they all were.

Apparently the vet came in and checked him over... and he certainly didn't agree with his vet tech. He complimented me on how good and patient Darwin was. I guess it just made me upset that she told me Darwin was whiny and finicky, just because he was happy to meet someone new. I wonder if it was a preconception about "designer dogs" that she has? He didn't jump or struggle or anything, he was just wagging his tail... sheesh!

Have you ever felt overly sensitive about your doodles? Anyone else get overly annoyed when people make unfounded accusations about the doodle breeds?

I get defensive about my dood too. I guess it's just the "mom" in us coming out!

I would have felt just as defensive. I don't like it when my Son calls Webber names, like "psycho" because of the zoomies! If it was someone I was paying, like the Vet, I would expect them to be nice. I was upset when my Vet recently told me Webber needed to loose a pound or two! She likes the dogs thin; I thought he was perfect. He's on a lower calorie dog food now! I know I can be unreasonably sensitive about Webber.

What the Doodle was she talking about....whiny and nervous? Apparently she hasn't met too many Doodles. Yes, I would also have been a little annoyed by this. I have a feeling that Darwin will change her mind in time though.

I don't know. I was really shocked, because all I ever hear about Darwin is how calm, patient, and easy going he is. It hurt to hear someone say he was "whiny" or "finicky". Obviously, I should shrug it off. It's just hard to hear criticism about your dog, no matter how unfounded it is.

Perhaps the vet tech is brand new and it was the tech who was nervous, finicky and whiny?

Sounds like this Vet tech needs to learn a little bedside manner.

Of course but I think the easiest thing to do is shrug it off. Some people can't even see what's in front of them!
