Learning to play nicely

Teddy has always loved all dogs, but as he's gotten older (he's 7 months now), he's becoming less interested in the small dogs, mainly because either the dogs don't want to play or the owners are very cautious around Teddy. Recently, we were approached by a little dog, both dogs were on leash. Teddy wanted to say "hi" and when he saw that it was a small dog, he lay down to get down to it's level. He then proceeded to play with the dog for about 10 minutes, all while lying down. Teddy could have literally swallowed the dog's head whole, but he had his mouth open and was gently biting only the dog's fur (it had some pretty long tufts of hair) and gently batting with his paws. Teddy rolled on his back and let the dog jump on top of him, but never tried to jump on the other dog, and they both had a great time wrestling. The dog's owners were thrilled. They said it was the best time their dog had playing in a long time! I was so proud of Teddy for finding a way to play nicely with a little dog!

Doodles are super good at playing with small dogs. My Peri is wonderful with our chihuahua.  Teddy is so cute!!!

I have problems with Lucy playing more gentle with smaller dogs.  She does this weird Dolphin nose jab.  She does it to Ethel too, but her size is comparable and she doesn't seem to mind it.  When she keeps poking (hard) the smaller dogs, it's very upsetting.  She doesn't mean to hurt them, but she thinks they should be able to hold their own.

Teddy does sound like such a sweet guy.  Murph hasn't yet figured out that he should play differently with the smaller dogs....probably because he's used to roughhousing with his little brother.
