Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

We are so thankful for Holly's wonderfully mellow and calm personality. We have just received two Maltese Rescue pregnant females and Holly has welcomed them into our home. These two girls were rescued from a non-air conditioned garage in Las Vegas, NV where the temperature was 120 degrees. They had no food or water and would heve died if they were not rescued. Apparently, the Las Vegas animal shelter is terrifically over-crowded and is a high kill type of shelter; so American Maltese Rescue stepped in to save the moms and their upcoming litters.

The recession has certainly impacted our dogs and cats. Shelter numbers have increased drastically from owners giving up their dogs after losing their homes. However, this was not the case with our two new fosters. This was just a case of cruel neglect on the part of some backyard breeder who wanted to make a couple of bucks and didn't care a whit about the health of the dogs.

The American Maltese Association member who rescued our two new foster females needed emergency surgery and Judy drove to Barstow, CA which is about half-way between our home and Las Vegas to pick up these two dogs. They had been with the AMA member for about two weeks and are now healthy are gaining weight. We are borrowing an extra puppy pen from another AMA member. The AMA also supports us with medical expense reimbursement.

Both these expectant mothers, despite their hard lives, are just friendly and loving. They were not at all awed by Holly's size and, of course, Holly doesn't do anything to frighten them. Just a few quick sniffs is all. Holly is a jewel among dogs and we are so proud of her hospitality.

So far, we have placed one puppy and one of the adult females, that we began fostering earlier, in forever homes. So; the numbers of Maltese we are fostering remains the same after the entry of the two new females. We are now fostering five adult Maltese and seven puppies. Of course, when the new litters of puppies arrive, our Maltese numbers will grow. We are thankful for the size of our home and how it is set up.

When the new pups arrive, Holly will have some more puppies to welcome into the world.

Leigh...

There we presently have a male and a female puppy ready for adoption with another male and female ready in a week or two. Marley has four puppies, three males and a female. It will be 8-10 weeks before they are ready to go.

However, we expect another litter to arrive very soon - probably today. The pregnant gal's temperature has dropped and she is beginning to show signs of nesting which indicated that the litter will be coming soon. We have not had her X-rayed but she is quite big and Judy (who is a retired maternity nurse) has listened with her stethoscope and hears at least three individual heartbeats - maybe four.

Wow your house really has gone to the dogs. It must keep you pretty busy. You are doing such an awesome thing for all these little dogs. Marley is such a cutie and she looks so content with her babies. Keep up the good work.

What is the sex of the puppies? Are you trying to find homes for them or have they already been adopted? They are adorable.

Here is a link to a youtube video I shot today. Marley's puppies are 3 weeks old. She is giving me the evil eye, warning me not to get any closer to the puppies... She's a wonderful mother and is extremely protective over her puppies...

OMG, what a houseful. You really are an amazing family. It's a good thing Maltese are small dogs.
