Judy just drove in from Oregon the with five puppies and four adult female Maltese (one of whom will be giving birth to her own puppies very shortly). The dogs are all in good health but, are pretty dirty but, I certainly cannot blame the previous owner who is dying for not caring for her dogs as well as they should be cared for.
I will start taking pictures of Holly's interaction with the puppies as soon as they are cleaned up. As I write, Judy is bathing them. My darling wife has bundles of energy... She got up in a Stockton, CA motel at 5:30 this morning, drove down to our house just North of San Diego and is bathing five puppies and three adult dogs. She bathed the pregnant female last night in the motel in case she had an emergency puppy arrival while driving down.
Holly just loves the pups like we knew she would. The batch of three 8-week old puppies are awed by her size and cower away from her but, then they cower away from me also - I'll work on that just as Holly will. She will change that dynamic within a couple of days but, it may take me a bit longer. The other two puppies who are only four weeks old went scrambling up to the side of their pen to greet her and she immediately began to lick them. She has won those two over already but, she needs to work a bit more on the three puppy litter.
The mother of the two puppies doesn't mind it at all when Holly comes up to them however she growls at the other Maltese. I could understand a mom letting Holly close to her puppies if she lived with Holly and was used to Holly's gent;le ways but, this gal has never seen Holly before a few hours ago. I guess Holly signals that she is no threat. Heck; when we were breeding Maltese, the Moms would let Holly lick their newborn babies but, would bite the head off any Maltese that even got close to the puppies.
It's the same thing when I walk Holly, people smile at her and have no fear of her. It's a bit different however when she is in her protective mode at our house. I doubt seriously if she would bite an intruder but, anyone wanting to intrude sure doesn't know that. They see a tall unknown breed of dog barking loudly and won't call her bluff. Of course it helps that I still have my "Property Protected By Trained Guard Dog" signs still up. They are left over from when I had my 85 pound German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Wolf... One sign has the picture of a German Shepherd and reads, "I can make it to the fence in 6.5 seconds." Can you?"
