Lost dog found!

We have new neighbors a couple of houses up on the other side of the street.  I noticed this morning that there was a young pit bull looking dog in their yard, trying to dig his way under the gate.  He'd gotten his head and part of a shoulder out.  Nobody was home at his house.  I took a big piece of firewood over and stuffed it under the gate, which seemed to scare him away from that spot. 

I'd been out for most of the afternoon, and had company later on.  Looking out, I saw the dog was digging again, and there still wasn't anyone home.  We kicked the firewood more firmly into place.  A bit later, I looked out just in time to see him wriggle under the gate to freedom.  I ran for a leash and some treats, but he'd disappeared.  My daughter and her boyfriend went looking for him, found him a few houses away and brought him back here.  Fortunately, he had a collar and tags, and we called the owner, who arrived quickly.  Whew!

Turns out the young couple had just adopted him yesterday, and said they were 'just learning his habits.'  We offered some strong advice about at least a couple of his habits (he barked all day).  He's a sweet, happy dog, and I'm glad he's back home and safe.  But.  You get a brand new dog and leave it alone in the yard all day??!!

Glad you were there to get him safely home.  Other neighbors might not have been so nice about it.  Hopefully they'll take your advice.  And maybe know to come to you if they have other questions.

Thank you all for the kind words.  I'm not usually a nosy neighbor, but I'd been hearing this dog barking for some time, which tends to draw attention--and once I saw him almost getting out of the yard, I was really paying attention.  Haven't seen him at all since then.

Some people should not own ANY type of pet/animal....they have NO clue, I feel sorry for the poor dog !!!  I hope he is safe !!!

They have their work cut out for them!  I'd guess this pup is maybe 9 months old and about 50-60 lbs of pure, solid, enthusiastic muscle.  He had no clue about how to walk on leash, or sit or that it isn't okay to jump up on everybody.  Not a challenge I'd want to take on!   Like Kaytlin said, I'd guess they left him outside because he doesn't know how to live inside.  We did suggest a crate for him if they weren't going to be home.
