We have new neighbors a couple of houses up on the other side of the street.  I noticed this morning that there was a young pit bull looking dog in their yard, trying to dig his way under the gate.  He'd gotten his head and part of a shoulder out.  Nobody was home at his house.  I took a big piece of firewood over and stuffed it under the gate, which seemed to scare him away from that spot.

I'd been out for most of the afternoon, and had company later on.  Looking out, I saw the dog was digging again, and there still wasn't anyone home.  We kicked the firewood more firmly into place.  A bit later, I looked out just in time to see him wriggle under the gate to freedom.  I ran for a leash and some treats, but he'd disappeared.  My daughter and her boyfriend went looking for him, found him a few houses away and brought him back here.  Fortunately, he had a collar and tags, and we called the owner, who arrived quickly.  Whew!

Turns out the young couple had just adopted him yesterday, and said they were 'just learning his habits.'  We offered some strong advice about at least a couple of his habits (he barked all day).  He's a sweet, happy dog, and I'm glad he's back home and safe.  But.  You get a brand new dog and leave it alone in the yard all day??!!

i guess they left him outside in case he did some damage to the house. maybe suggest as crate for him til they know he can be trusted free roaming in the house

I think this young pair is well-intentioned but clueless about dogs.  Fortunately, the pup had a collar and tags already--though we had a backup plan for taking care of him if we couldn't reach them yesterday.  Good thing he's white as it was dark when we were looking for him!

You did a good deed indeed. I agree with the others this story will continue and I too wonder why some people get dogs.

It was nice of you to be so on top of things and hopefully they will take your advice.  Good luck!  Sad for the dog to be left alone when he doesn't even really know where he is or who owns him now.

Somehow I don't think that was the end to his saga, but I hope the young couple listen to your advice and keep the pup safe.

Pat, You are a good neighbor and I am glad you were home and helped. Why do people get dogs sometimes? There really ought to be a test of some sort before you are allowed to have kids or pets.

Duh is all I can say. Hopefully this young couple will take some good advice from their "friendly" neighbor! Glad you guys noticed, and this was the beginning of a better situation.
